I just read Zenescope’s Wonderland #47 and all I can say is Wow!!!
When I got the email preview I found out that there were only three issues left in the series, and my first thought was “oh great, I’m going to be lost.” I figured the last few comics would be a confusing mess of story lines that they are attempting to clean up and finalize, meaning that if you didn’t know the comic line, you would be absolutely clueless.
Boy was I wrong!!
I’ll be honest, I think I read the first few issues in the series and then I wandered on to other comics. Don’t get me wrong, it seemed like a good series, but you can only follow so many things at once, and your money only goes so far. So this series faded into the background for me.
The cover immediately got my attention. Even before I opened it or scrolled down to the title at the bottom of the page, I knew that had to be the Tweedles; you also instantly knew that they were a pretty grim pair. This issue, titled TWEEDLE DEE AND TWEEDLE DUM, is written by Erica J Heflin, drawn by Giorgia Sposito, colored by Leonardo Paciarotti, and lettered by Christy Sawyer. I loved it before I opened it.
One feature I have always liked about these comics is that they give you a nice summary:
The Story So Far…
After years of torment at the hands of Wonderland and its
many psychopathic denizens, Calie Liddle finally claimed victory.
By defeating the Queen of Spades, Calie assumed leadership of
Wonderland. And now she cares for the realm that once existed to
torment her family. With the White Rabbit and a newly reformed
Cheshire Cat by her side, Calie seeks to transform the tainted
realm back to its original glory… But it will not be an easy task. This
is the story of Calie Liddle… White Queen of Wonderland.
Previously in Wonderland…
The opposition has won. Calie, Violet, and Cheshire have been
kicked out of their kingdom and, under the tyrannical rule of the
Ace of Spades, Wonderland has fallen again. Now that they’re
back on Earth, their enemy is sending horrors from the Realm of
Dreams to corrupt reality. It is up to Wonderland’s former White
Queen to put a stop to these living nightmares.
For a first time reader of the storyline, the first few panels were a little confusing and obviously tie directly to an earlier issue, but they make a fantastic counterpoint to the main storyline of the issue..and that is where I got hooked.
They do a great job in the conversation of letting you know who is who and where they are without going into long winded redundant speeches or editorials.
The comic is dark and gritty with some great by-play between the characters. I love the banter between Calie, Violet and Cheshire, it’s light-hearted, but shows a motive and goal.
They are hunting their Wonderland enemies on Earth!
Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum might have made a mistake when a mutilated victim escapes them, leading the Liddles to find their lair…or did they? Now the hunters are about to become victims of their prey.
An issue definitely worth reading when it hits shelves on May 4th.
