The police are failing to maintain control of their old-fashioned town, and a coven of killer witches plan to take everything from them. This summer, hide your bibles.
PopCultHQ’s Comic Book Review:
Redlands #1
For her first foray in creator-owned works, Jordie Bellaire is hitting the nail on the head. This first issue is gripping, it’s suspenseful, it’s going to have readers asking questions that will only be answered with reading the series. Saying anything else would give too much away and then people will not want to go read this issue for themselves.
Vanesa R. Del Rey’s art has a rough texture, but that only adds to the suspense and horror nature of Jordie Bellaire’s script. And like the script, the art will keep being in the reader’s face and provide lots of thrills and scares throughout issue #1 and as the series continues.
Jordie is also the colorist for the series and what colors! There is not a single bright and cheery color in this comic. It’s dark, like the story. Like the art, it’s dark. This is a very intense comic, so intense colors wedded to an intense story and intense art is the perfect combination.
Clayton Cowles is the third part of this team, giving the story and art further life with his lettering. It is very lively, from the dialogue of the characters to the scenery/effects. Readers will get the sense that they have entered world where anything can happen, thanks in part to Cowles’ lettering.
PopCultHQ’s overall assessment:
This comic is frightening! It’s pure horror genius! Bellaire, Del Rey and Cowles are the perfect trio working in concert to bring this fright fest of a series to life. Readers will keep turning the pages to find out what happens next but at the same time they will be filled with fear because of what could happen next. Even though this series is an original creation, it smacks of the classic horror/monster comics of the 1950’s and 1970’s. It is sure to become a fast favorite for all who pick it up.
