This last weekend was an interesting convention of a different sort. Geneva Steam was held in Delevan, WI.
Unlike your typical comic and anime conventions which are held in any available conference rooms or centers, Steampunk conventions are about atmosphere. After all, they are the Victorian era and they want to reflect that. Organizers of these conventions try for settings they feel are appropriate.
Geneva Steam was no exception. It was held at the Lake Lawn Resort which was built in the 1870’s around Indian burial mounds. The hotel is described as rustic and country, mixed with a bit of regal Victorianism. The perfect spot for a Steampunk Convention.
Like any convention there were a variety of panels, many of them covering your typical con subjects such as surviving a con and how to pose for pictures; others were a little different and included topics such as the history of tea and how to wear a corset.
There were also a variety of vendors, costume contests, photographers and entertainment.
The whole convention was the brainchild of Melinda “Pinky” Mitchell who had a fantastic team helping her. Keep an eye on the Geneva Steam website for more information about nest years convention in the location March 10-12, 2017
