PopCultHQ’s Comic Book Review:
Deadpool: Assassin #5
Writing:
Oh, it’s the final countdown. Yes, the second-to-last issue of Cullen’s ultra-violent, over-the-top Deadpool miniseries is here. And folks, this reviewer is sorry to see it wrapping up so soon. Cullen kept serving up a hearty helping of butt-whoopin’ Deadpool-style. And here in the penultimate issue, there’s no shortage of Deadpool-style antics. Plus, some unexpected surprises from Cullen. The sort that will make reading the final issue all the more enjoyable.
Art:
Over the course of the past four issues, Mark Bagley has been unwavering in his skills as artist. Every page and panel have been top-to-bottom full of of good old-fashioned murder and mayhem, done in a way that only Mark can. Deadpool at his finest – killing villains, being the baddest of the bad and the craziest of the crazy. Bagley is winding up for the big one clearly, a finale that gives justice to his artwork and the Deadpool character.
Like the rest of the art squad on this four-color freaky series, John’s been an outstanding inker. Issue #5, lots of great style inking over every inch of the book. One of the finer examples of John’s work is on page 6 as Deadpool walks from the shadows, guns poised. The inking has the shadows playing excellently off his costume and mask, making for a rather dramatic moment.
Edgar and Dono, what a coloring team. 5 issues down, 1 more to go. It’s like they took all the different reds for the really epic fights and just mixed them to make one giant, super red. Plus all those crazy villains and their costumes, gotta love some breaking out color work. These two, right here, nailed it. Gonna be a sad thing to see them help bring this little, crazy Wade-fest to a close.
And last but not least, good old Joe. He’s like a foundation stone alongside everyone, making a wall of totally awesome Deadpool goodness. The lettering for all of Deadpool’s dialogue and thoughts, there is some serious edge being channeled there. It’s as if Joe tapped into all the rage Ryan Reynolds put forth in both films and re-directed it here. Good on Joe, his lettering for DP will be missed at the end.
PopCultHQ’s overall assessment:
Welcome, dear Deadpool lovers. It’s getting time to almost reach the end of this little multi-part murder spree. There’s been a lot of laughs, a lot of deaths, and a whole lotta Deadpool. It’s been such a trip with the entire creative team. This issue is a great set-up to a sure-fired epic ending. Don’t miss out!
