PopCultHQ’s Comic Book Review:
Black Hammer: Age of Doom #1

Writing:

Jeff is back in the saddle on Black Hammer once again. Picking right up where he left off at the end of the first series, there is the startling revelation of Lucy literally becoming her father’s successor as Black Hammer. Then things go from startling to strange and then to just plain weird for both the wayward heroes and Lucy. Jeff is opening up with a heavy salvo of emotions and bizarre stuff that makes the first issue sizzle and pop for readers.

Art:

Dean does it again. The master artist kicks open the door for another round in the ring. This time though, things take a step away from Rockwood and enter into a new and strange place. With a whole host of new faces entering the scene, Dean has a right time giving them all distinctive features. All of this is to simply say, welcome back to Dean, looking forward to more of his out-of-sight art.

Dave dive-bombs his way back into Black Hammer with a bang. Getting out his vast amount of colors, readers will note that when the scene shifts, the colors shift too. When everything goes a little dark, the colors reflect it too. Certain figures have colors that are very toned down, but still draw the across them and their bizarre features (courtesy of Dean). Dave pours his heart into the work like he always does and with the second Black Hammer series, everyone will enjoy the colors just as much as before.

Todd serves up some super heavy emotions returning as letterer. Serving as the final gateway to accessing and understanding these heroes underneath it all, their very core selves. If anything, he allows people to get to know the characters better and bringing them along on the new journey he is lettering.

PopCultHQ’s overall assessment:

For all who loved Black Hammer and its various tie-in books, Black Hammer: Age of Doom will be a welcome thing indeed. As the sequel series to the first run, issue #1 brings all the returning team’s gifts and abilities to bear. Come back into the world of Black Hammer and see what happens next!
