PopCultHQ’s Comic Book Review:
DOCTOR STAR & THE KINGDOM OF LOST TOMORROWS:
FROM THE WORLD OF BLACK HAMMER #2

Writing:

Jeff is getting into the swing of things with issue #2. Where issue #1 had a sharp focus on Doctor Star’s origin and his start in heroics, now readers find him well into his super career. And when he decides to take to the stars to help another planet, it will be at a terrible personal cost. See what happened long ago and how it is impacting the good Doctor in the present.

Art:

Max’s artwork gets a little out of this world this time. With Jeff’s story taking Doctor Star into the far reaches of space, that means Max flexes his muscles by drawing some lavish and beautiful interstellar pages. They are the stuff of pure amazement, the sort of thing that excites people and gets them thinking about traveling to other worlds and seeing what lies out there.

Dave did a dynamite job coloring Max’s art. Some of the most eye-popping moments are on pages 13-18. There, Dave has a ball bringing the ‘otherworldly’ elements of the story to full multi-color life. And this feels like the tip of the iceberg, which means whatever is in store in the coming issues, it can only mean more fantastic color work.

Nate has shown that he has a real flair for lettering. Each character generates their own persona through his words. And like in issue #1, there is a lot of deep character development for Doctor Star that is generated through his internal thought boxes. It shows that underneath the scientist and hero is a man who is suffering from depression, guilt, and firm resolve.

PopCultHQ’s overall assessment:

Every hero reaches a point where their deeds and actions affect not only their world, but worlds beyond Earth. In wanting to reach to the stars and see what is out there, Doctor Star will see what a terrible cost it is and how much it will ripple into his present while trying to reconcile with his son.

PopCultHQ’s Rating:

5 Out of 5 Stars
