Last week, we reported that Venom was not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This information came from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige in an interview with Allocine, “For now, there is no plan for Venom in the MCU. It’s a Sony Project.”
Yet this week the internet is in a uproar because of an interview by Amy Pascal, the Producer of Spider-Man: Homecoming.

What made it more convincing and jaw-dropping for everyone is that fact that Kevin Feige was sitting beside her and didn’t say a word to counter it. Kevin had stated “… there is no plan for Venom in the MCU.”
Venom movie rights, at this point, are owned entirely by Sony, so what Kevin is saying is that there are no current deals that will have Venom appear in any Marvel film or TV series.
Several years ago, Spider-Man movie rights were sold to Sony and Marvel has not purchased them back. Technically, Spider-Man is still Sony property; he has only entered the MCU because of an agreement made several years ago between Sony, Marvel and Disney. During an interview in March, Amy talks briefly about the agreement and how rare and wonderful it was for the studios to work together.

Regarding the more recent interview, Amy stated “Both movies will all take place in the world that we’re now creating for Peter Parker. I mean, they’ll be adjuncts to it, there may be different locations, but it will still all be in the same world and they will be connected to each other.”
Adjunct means “connected or added to something, typically in an auxiliary way.”
She did not say that the characters were in the Universe, only the same world. Sony still owns Spider-Man so if Venom (and the other comic book movies) does well, they are leaving it wide open so they can bring Spider-Man back into their universe. There is at least one more jointly made movie in the current agreement. Once that movie is done, it looks like Spider-Man returns to being strictly Sony property and Sony can do what they want with him, which includes incorporating him with Venom.
Sony doesn’t want to have to start Spider-Man all over again, so they have left themselves a back door which will enable the webslinger to cross between the worlds.
This means that we will NOT see Venom in the MCU, however there may be a chance that we will see a webslinger, or reference to him, in the background of Venom.
If you are still confused, then just think of it as Spidey stepping across to a different timeline…it’s very similar, but with a few differences, such as no Avengers. The new timeline knows that the other timeline exists, but doesn’t really care.
