Last night, April 11th, was the conclusion of the biggest wrestling weekend of the year, Wrestlemania 37. Unlike the previous night, the show started on time and had no rain delays. Titus O’Neil and Hulk Hogan started off the show wearing funny pirate costumes while they hyped up the crowd and got everyone excited.
***WARNING: This article contains spoilers for the
second night of Wrestlemania 37 from April 11th, 2021***
The first match started out with one of the longest build feuds of the year, The Fiend vs. Randy Orton. This was the first official match between them since Randy “killed” the Fiend at TLC. Fans were excited to see how the Fiend would enter the match. The charred zombie-looking Fiend walked through a tunnel where he was engulfed with flames, the fire slowly disappearing and revealing the original Fiend emerging from the ashes. Alexa Bliss, looking sweet and innocent, hopped down the ramp to her Firefly Funhouse music, then started turning the crank on a huge jack-in-the-box at ringside. The toy opened slowly as the Fiend emerged. (Fans may notice that the Fiend/Bray Wyatt paid a small tribute to his good friend AEW’s Brodie Lee who passed away last year.) The Fiend tried to land his mandible claw onto Randy, but he managed to escape and land some devastating blows onto the Fiend, which barely affected him. Randy attempted to hit the Fiend with the RKO, but was countered with a successful Mandible Claw. As the Fiend was choking out Randy and setting up his finisher, Sister Abigail, the ring started burning. The jack-in-the-box opened and Evil Alexa Bliss was there with a crown of thorns and was bleeding black blood. She held her hand out to the Fiend who reached toward her. Randy hit his RKO onto the distracted Fiend and won the match then quickly left. The Field got up, looked at Bliss, then they angrily stared at each other as the lights slowly turned off.
The Women Tag Team Championship Match was next, Natalya and Tamina versus the champions Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler. Natalya tried to hit the sharpshooter submission onto Nia Jax. As she almost got it locked in, Shayna Baszler grabbed her from behind and put Natalya to sleep. Natalya faded out and the champions retained their title.
Former friends now turned into enemies were next on the bill. Sami Zayne entered first screaming that WWE had a conspiracy against him and he introduced his “new friend” and someone that will help him with his documentary, YouTuber Logan Paul, who sat with the commentators watching the match. Kevin Owens entered the ring, the bell rang, and the match began. Both of these wrestlers were long-time friends and were very familiar with each other’s styles, meaning both were able to dodge and counter the other. Sami hit Owens with his Helluva Kick, which almost had him pinned for the win but Owens kicked out. Owens landed his stunner and won the match. Logan Paul entered the ring to help Sami up and tried to talk it out with Kevin. Sami was having none of that. He screamed at Logan to stop talking to Owens, and Logan shoved him to the ground. Sami stormed off screaming to Hell with them and Logan held Kevin’s arm up in victory, which was not appreciated. He hit Logan Paul with the stunner and the crowd cheered.
The USA Championship match featured Riddle vs. Sheamus. Both men were laying it all in the ring. Riddle, with his MMA background, and Sheamus using his power and strength, this match was extremely physical. Sheamus did a surprise Bro Kick and tried to pin his opponent, but he kicked out. Sheamus landed his White Noise and pinned Riddle, who escaped. He had underestimated the resilience of Riddle. Riddle tried to knee Sheamus. He then flipped from the second rope onto him, but Sheamus Bro Kicked Riddle in midair. That devastating move knocked out Riddle and Sheamus pined him for the win. Sheamus is the new USA Champion.
During the Nigerian Drum Fight match for the Intercontinental Championship, Big E entered first with live entrance music as he danced down the ramp. The ring was surrounded by drums and weapons and was a no disqualification match. Immediately, both men slid out of the ring and grabbed kendo sticks to beat the other with. The match was violent and both men gave it their all. Big E landed some brutal offense onto Crews and it looked like Big E was about to win when a large man dressed in similar gear to Crews came out and chokeslammed Big E to the ground. This was the main stage debut of Dabba Kato (from Raw Underground). Apollo Crews took advantage and pinned Big E for the win and the title.
The Raw Women’s Championship was up next. Rhea Ripley, a newcomer to the main roster, came out to a grand entrance with live music, amazing lights, and pyrotechnics. Once Asuka came out, the match began. Asuka was the veteran and submission specialist who came out hot and fast putting a lot of offense on Rhea. Asuka attempted various arm submission holds that were countered when Rhea picked her up and threw her. Anytime Asuka tried to pin Rhea, she kicked out. Rhea was finally able to hit her Rip Tide onto Asuka and pinned her for the win. Rhea Ripley is your new Raw Women’s Champion.
Titus O’Neil and Hulk Hogan were entertaining the crowds when they were interrupted by Bayley. She was complaining that she didn’t have time to shine and never got the praise she deserved. She felt that the Hall of Famers were taking away her spotlight. The Bella Twins, who were inducted to the Hall of Fame, entered. Bayley immediately told them to shut up because it’s her turn to speak, so the Bella Twins beat her down and she ran away. The segment ended with Titus O’Neil, Hulk Hogan, and the Bella Twins dancing on stage.
The main event of Wrestlemania was finally here. This was a triple threat match for the WWE Universal Championship between Daniel Bryan, Edge, and Roman Reigns. After Bryan and Edge had their entrance, the current WWE Champion entered. Roman was accompanied by his manager Paul Heyman and his cousin Jay Uso. In a triple threat match, the champion does not need to be pinned to lose their title. The moment the bell rang, Roman knew he was at a disadvantage and immediately attacked Edge and Bryan. It didn’t take long before Jay was helping his cousin on the outside, he put a beatdown onto Bryan, then superkicked Edge. Roman cleared out the announcers’ table. As he was setting the table up, Bryan dove onto Roman. Jay tried to kick Bryan, but was thrown onto the steel steps. Edge was able to whip Roman onto the corner of the ring several times. Jay tried to interfere, but Edge planted a hard DDT onto him and the medical team carried an unconscious Jay away. When Roman finally powerbombed Bryan onto the announcers’ table, it was the beginning of the end. Roman was celebrated as Edge landed his spear from the top steps, then grabbed a bunch of chairs he threw into the ring. He locked Roman in a crossface submission and, to add to the injury, put a piece of the chair into Roman’s mouth. Bryan also grabbed Roman’s face and did his Yes Lock onto him. Both men wrenched back on Roman’s face as he screamed in pain. Bryan and Edge then started on each other, releasing Roman. Edge speared Bryan, turned around and speared Roman, and then pinned Roman. As the referee was about to count 3, Bryan pulled the referee out of the ring and Edge lost it. He had a crazed look on his face as he placed both men heads into the chairs. He lifted a chair above his head and swung it down at Bryan’s head, neutralizing him. Edge does it again, ready to end Roman, but Jay surprised Edge from behind. Roman speared Edge and placed Edge’s head into the chair and knocked him out. Roman dragged Edge and tossed him on top of Bryan, then got on top of both men and pinned them. He retained his championship and looked to be unstoppable.
