[Movie News] In Theaters This Week – June 14, 2019

Last weekend might not have had many new movie releases, but this weekend certainly has more than its share, and some of them are sure to be big. In addition to the usual slate of documentaries and foreign films, there is a zombie move starring Bill Murray and Adam Driver, a comedy with Jim Gaffigan, and the return of the Men in Black franchise starring the MCU duo of Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. There certainly is a lot to choose from!

It’s the week before one of the year’s biggest superhero movies is released, but there are still plenty of new movies to hold you over. This week’s new movies include the story of a child miraculously brought back to life, a modern Western centered around two sisters, Disney Nature’s latest offering about penguins, and much more!

Breakthrough (PG)

When he was 14, Smith drowned in Lake Sainte Louis and was dead for nearly an hour. According to reports at the time, CPR was performed 27 minutes to no avail. Then the youth’s mother, Joyce Smith, entered the room, praying loudly. Suddenly, there was a pulse, and Smith came around.

[Trailer] A New Chapter Begins With ‘MIB: International’

The Men in Black movie franchise has typically followed the adventures of Agents J and K, members of the black-suited agents of a secret government agency dedicated to monitoring extraterrestrials on Earth. This time around we meet Agents H and M, played by Thor: Ragnarok co-stars Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth.

This is by no means a reboot, but simply an expansion of the MIB universe, introducing us to the London bureau, headed by Liam Neeson’s character. We also see Emma Thompson’s Agent O, who introduces Agent M to the world of the Men in Black.

We have previously only seen behind the scenes photos and videos of the production, but today brought with it the first trailer.

From the look of the trailer, it appears that this film will be more of an action style than its predecessors, though it certainly will not be without comedic moments. Thompson and Hemswoth shine, showing that the two obviously work well together. If this is just a taste of what’s to come, MIB: International should be quite the ride.

MIB: International will be released June 14, 2019.

[Photos] Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson Give First Look at Latest ‘Men In Black’ Film

The government has a new pair of agents in its fight against extraterrestrial life on Earth.

With a new Men In Black film due to come out next year, filming is currently well underway in London. A few photos from paparazzi and bystanders have circled around the internet, but stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson recently shared the first official behind-the-scenes photos and videos of the production via social media.

The film is a quick reunion for the actors, who recently starred together in last year’s Thor: Ragnarok. By the look of things, the pair are having a blast on this most recent project.

Thompson shared a photo of them in their eponymous suits, proving that even government agents know how to have a little fun. Hemsworth shared a pair of videos of some similar goofing off between filming.

 

 

Nothing is known yet about the plot of the Men In Black spin-off. The film also stars Rebecca Ferguson, Emma Thompson, and Liam Neeson.

The latest Men In Black film is scheduled to be in theaters June 14, 2019.

[Video] ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Director Takes Center Stage In Gag Reel

Just a couple months ago, Thor: Ragnarok blasted into theaters, delighting audiences with the Thor’s struggle to save his home of Asgard. With director Taika Waititi behind the camera as director, it became the most successful Thor movie. Waititi lent his trademark charm and quirky sense of humor to the film, even donning a motion capture suit as the rock creature Korg. With Thor: Ragnarok coming out on home video, we recently got a peek behind the scenes the release of a gag reel.

Waititi takes center stage in the gag reel, starting with humming along and making up his own lyrics to the Marvel Studios music. What follows is two minutes of pure fun, showing us a glimpse of just how much fun it muse have been to make this movie. Waititi dances all around the various sets, even trying on Chris Hemsworth‘s Thor wig, and playing with the set dressings on Sakaar. The other actors comment on Waititi’s particular sense of humor and how he created such a light-hearted feeling on set.

This featurette and more will be available when Thor: Ragnarok comes out on digital February 20 and Blu-Ray and DVD on March 7.

See The Cast of ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Act Out The Film Live

Late night host James Corden has become know for his Crosswalk: The Musical segments, bringing popular musicals to the street corners and entertaining drivers while they are stopped at traffic lights. With the premiere of Thor: Ragnarok this week, Corden decided to take the concept of 3D movies one step further and premiered the concept of 4D movies for an advanced screening audience of the superhero film.

What’s a 4D movie, you ask? Shortly after the film starts, Corden stops the film onscreen and brings out the cast of Thor: Ragnarok to act out the film in person for the audience. Chris Hemsworth, Cate Blanchett, Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, Tessa Thompson, and Jeff Goldblum all came out in low-budget versions of their costumes with even lower-budget sets to entertain the fans.

At first, the audience doesn’t know what to expect, but they find the fun in the experiment. They cheer during the fights and laugh along with the flubs that come with live acting. There are also cuts to the actors voicing their thoughts on the production, including Hemsworth being confused about what exactly 4D means. Corden thinks the concept could go far, and tells the actors to come back in a few hours to do it all over again!

The segment does cover the main action points for the film, so if you don’t want to know what happens, go see the film first and then come back and watch this.

Watch Thor Battle the Hulk in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Teaser Trailer

This morning saw the release of a teaser trailer for the latest installment of Thor movies, entitled Thor: Ragnarok. We got a first look at the movie one month ago when Entertainment Weekly gave us a peek of Thor’s new haircut, but now we get to see it in action, as how he came to get it.

There a heck of a lot going on in this trailer: the introduction of Hela, Goddess of Death, Asgard in ruins, Loki flipping around throwing knives, Jeff Goldblum‘s Grandmaster, and Thor being forced to fight his friend the Hulk in an arena. But one of the more shocking moments comes at the beginning of the trailer when we see Hela crush Mjolnir, Thor’s trusty hammer.

The trailer seems to hint that the movie will have a bit of lightness and humor to it, despite some very dark circumstances. This is no doubt due to the influence of director Taika Waititi, best known for the film What We Do in the Shadows. One of the complaints of the two previous Thor movies is that there was almost no humor, something Marvel seems to have attempted to rectify in this film.

Thor: Ragnarok flies into theaters November 3rd.

Marvel Announces Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, Karl Urban, & Mark Ruffalo to Star in Thor: Ragnarok

Marvel has officially announced the cast of their upcoming film Thor: Ragnarok. As posted today on Marvel.com, it has been confirmed that the third Thor film will feature the likes of Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, Karl Urban, and Tessa Thompson.

The announcement also delivered the very first piece of promotional artwork from Thor: Ragnarok featuring the silhouette of Blanchett as the villain Hela.

Among the returning cast members from previous “Thor” features are Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Idris Elba (Heimdall) and Sir Anthony Hopkins (Odin). Also confirming months of rumors and speculation, Mark Ruffalo will indeed be reprising his role as Bruce Banner/The Hulk. Come on, Planet Hulk set-up!

Notably absent from the announced cast was previous standouts from Thor films: The Warriors Three (Hogun, Fandral, and Volstagg) and Lady Sif. You would think with this movie with the film’s shift back to the Nine Realms that Thor’s fellow Asgardians would be a no-brainer to include. When the announcement was made by Marvel, a fan on Twitter was taken aback and questioned about Sif’s exclusion from the film. Jaimie Alexander, ever so present on social media, made certain to reply and possibly tease her answer (with a wink, no less!)…

 

 

Following the announcement, Marvel Studios mega-producer Kevin Feige took the opportunity to declare his excitement of the additions to the film.

“The continuation of the epic ‘Thor’ franchise will be powerful and unique, and with the additions of Cate, Jeff, Tessa, Karl, and Mark to the cast we have the makings of his most dangerous and heroic adventure yet,” Producer Kevin Feige stated with great pride. “The sheer, raw talent each of these actors brings to the screen can’t be quantified. Having any one of them join the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be an honor, and having all of them is incredible.”

So with these well-known actors attaching themselves to the project, and hence joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, just who will they each portray? That, my friends, was answered today as well.

New Thor Cast

Cate Blanchett:  Hela – First appearing in Journey into Mystery #102 (March, 1964), Hela was born in Jotunheim, the land of the giants. She is the child of Loki (albeit a different incarnation who died during a previous Asgardian Ragnarok) and the giantess Angrboða. When she came of age, Odin appointed her as the Goddess of Death, giving her rulership over the dead in the realms of Hel and Niffleheim.

Karl Urban: Skurge – Journey into Mystery #103 (April, 1964) saw the appearance of this character also referred to as The Executioner. Skurge the Executioner was one of Asgard’s greatest warriors. He was born the illegitimate son of a Frost Giant and a Asgardian from the realm of Skarnheim. Later became a warrior, gaining the name Executioner after fighting in a war against the Storm Giants. He has had countless run-ins with Thor, Loki, The Hulk, and The Avengers.

Jeff Goldblum: Grandmaster – Also known as En Dwi Gast,  first appeared in The Avengers #69. He is one of the oldest living beings in the universe, coming from one of the first intelligent races to evolve after the Big Bang. In the comics, he once possessed the Mind Gem, one of the six Infinity Gems, but he lost it to Thanos. He is a cosmic game player whose preferred game is pitting two opposing teams against each other.

Tessa Thompson: Valkyrie – first appeared in The Avengers #83 (December 1970) and has become a mainstay of the superhero team known as the Defenders. An Asgardian by birth, Valkyrie, also known by her real name Brunnhilde, was selected by Odin to lead the Valkyrior, a group of female warriors designated by Odin to bring the souls of slain heroes to Valhalla, just as in Norse mythology.

Thor: Ragnarok is the third installment of Marvel’s Norse superhero series. The film will be directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Taika Waititi (“Two Cars, One Night,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” “Hunt for the Wilderpeople”).  Kevin Feige will produce the film, joined by executive producers Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Victoria Alonso, Thomas M. Hammel and Stan Lee.

 

Thor: Ragnarok is scheduled for a November 3, 2017 release.
