Dungeons and Dragons Honor Amongst thieves

Today, I am reviewing the new movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Let me start by saying I’m very familiar with Dungeons & Dragons. I’ve been playing the game and entrenched in its genre since the 1st edition. I have always loved the game and have been disappointed in Hollywood’s past attempts to bring this fantasy world to life. But, this time I was not let down.

The movie truly gives a good and entertaining view of the Dungeons & Dragons world – enough comedy in the right places to make you laugh, enough drama to keep the story interesting, and the right amount of action to make the movie thrilling. The story was well thought-out and enjoyable. It reminded me of a true game adventure as the characters worked their way through the plot trying to reach their goal.

The special effects were amazing and, as a fan of this fantasy world, I was blown away to how true to canon they stayed. I was mentally naming each spell and monster as they were presented and likely annoying my friends as I poked them and told them what some of them were. There was a lot to see and they did a wonderful job of fleshing out the background of every scene. SO MUCH TO LOOK AT! Even the locations they visited and talked about were taken straight from the Dungeons & Dragons books, campaigns and adventures.

The movie provides us with Edgin (Chris Pine) a Bard down on his luck, teamed with Holga (Michelle Rodriguez) the Barbarian fighter exiled by her tribe. They are joined by a bumbling young Wizard Simon (Justice Smith), and a Tiefling Druid Doric (Sophia Lillis). Hugh Grant does an amazing job playing the not so trustworthy conman Forge, and Daisy Head delivers a wonderful performance as the evil Red Wizard Sofina.

The characters come together in an attempt to return Edgin’s wife to the living and rescue his daughter Kira (Chloe Coleman), but find themselves involved in a much greater adventure with more widespread consequences if they fail.

I truly enjoyed the movie and was so thankful that Hollywood finally got it right and delivered an excellent Dungeons & Dragons movie that, if he were alive, even Gary Gygax would be applauding.

Another good benchmark is the fact I watched the movie with some people that knew very little about the Dungeons & Dragons world, but sat down with an open mind and they really enjoyed the film for what it was.

I give Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves a rating of 5 out of 5 Stars and if you follow my reviews, you know I don’t hand those out often.
