So here’s the deal on PopCultHQ’s Green Lantern Challenge – I line up a commission piece from a comic creator. I give them free reign as to the choice of character. I don’t want to know or be aware of which Green Lantern from DC Comics they’ve chosen until the official reveal. Basically, the Green Lantern Challenge operates like this…

THE RUNDOWN:

  1. The Creator’s Choice: Creator can select from ANY Green Lantern throughout history. Entirely their choice! It can be a Green Lantern who has protected Sector 2814 (i.e. Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, Simon Baz, Jessica Cruz). It can be an alien Green Lantern patrolling other sectors (i.e. Tomar-Re, Katma Tui, Arisia Rrab, Kilowog, Salaak). It can even be older or lesser-known Green Lanterns (i.e. Alan Scott, Boodikka, Abin Sur, Ch’p, Yalan Gur). It simply HAS to be a Green Lantern or one that has been a Green Lantern at some point, meaning no characters who are always associated with a different Lantern in the spectrum. Sorry, Larfleeze, Saint Walker, etc.
  2. The Exceptions: The creator cannot choose a Lantern already selected in a previous Green Lantern Challenge. The first Challenge was performed by Phillip Sevy, who chose Thaal Sinestro. The second Challenge was performed by Davi Leon Dias, who chose Hal Jordan.
  3. The Big Reveal: I will share the character he/she chose to draw/sketch/illustrate in a feature here at PopCultHQ (What you are reading now).

The Green Lantern Challenge is a way in which we, at PopCultHQ, can make an even greater connection with comic book creators. The Challenge is a way of providing a platform for creators to showcase their talent. To show off their skills and get creative with their choice of Green Lantern, as well as put their signature look to their chosen character. Plus, Green Lantern is my favorite comic book character of all-time, so it’s a win for me too! 😉

For our third Green Lantern Challenge, I commissioned Ringo Award-nominated (BEST COVER ARTIST) artist Fábio Alves, the artist on Rylend Grant‘s BANJAX at Action Lab: Danger Zone & Grant’s Kickstarter campaign for THE JUMP. One of the tiers for the latter offered a digital commission from the artist, which I backed and opted for the full color option. To add to Fábio’s artwork is colorist Edson Ferreira, who also colored the same two books of Grant’s alongside Alves.

Without further ado, stepping up with the third submission to PopCultHQ’s Green Lantern Challenge…Fábio Alves!

Alves’ Process Shots + Final Piece

I’d like to personally thank Fábio and Edson for the absolutely stunning commission of John Stewart and for partaking in our third Green Lantern Challenge. This baby is getting printed, framed, and mounted on my Green Lantern wall next to the previous submissions! To see more from the creators, follow both of them at the links below.

And here’s one last look at the finished commission in all its glory!
