[Convention] PopCultHQ’s Green Lantern Challenge: Phillip Sevy at Rose City Comic Con 2019

With all the conventions PopCultHQ attends each year, there is always a lot with which could be covered: interviews from the show, cosplay pics, panels, signing appearances, and who knows what else? But I am continually looking for ways to improve what we do, expand our coverage in new ways, and find interesting and/or unique ways to promote comic book creators. My latest concept is one I think fans will enjoy…the Green Lantern Challenge.

So here’s the deal – I line up a commission piece from a comic creator prior to the show I am about to cover on-site for PopCultHQ. I give them free reign as to the choice of character. I don’t want to know or be aware of which Green Lantern from DC Comics they’ve chosen until the official reveal. Basically, the Green Lantern Challenge operates like this…

THE RUNDOWN:

  1. The Creator’s Choice: Creator can select from ANY Green Lantern throughout history. Entirely their choice! It can be a Green Lantern who has protected Sector 2814 (i.e. Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, Simon Baz, Jessica Cruz). It can be an alien Green Lantern patrolling other sectors (i.e. Tomar-Re, Katma Tui, Arisia Rrab, Kilowog, Salaak). It can even be older or lesser-known Green Lanterns (i.e. Alan Scott, Boodikka, Abin Sur, Ch’p, Yalan Gur). It simply HAS to be a Green Lantern or one that has been a Green Lantern at some point, meaning no characters who are always associated with a different Lantern in the spectrum. Sorry, Larfleeze, Saint Walker, etc.
  2. The Convention: Upon arriving at the event, I’ll connect with the creator to see if the commission is completed. If so, we’ll establish a time for its presentation.
  3. The Big Reveal: I will film a LIVE video at the convention of the creator revealing, for the first time, the character he/she chose to draw/sketch/illustrate.

The Green Lantern Challenge is a way in which we, at PopCultHQ, can make an even greater connection with comic book creators. At cons, we take photos and conduct interviews on-site with writers and artists, but the Challenge is more than merely talking to the individual about their work. It’s providing a platform for creators to showcase their talent. To show off their skills and get creative with their choice of Green Lantern, as well as put their signature look to their chosen character. Plus, Green Lantern is my favorite comic book character of all-time, so it’s a win for me too! 😉

For our first Green Lantern Challenge, I tapped creator Phillip Sevy, the writer/artist/colorist on the new Dark Horse Comics sci-fi title TRIAGE. I had the privilege in interviewing Phillip at this year’s Comic Con International: San Diego 2019, as well as reviewed his new miniseries at Dark Horse.

Knowing I’d be heading to Portland, Oregon for our first appearance at Rose City Comic Con, I saw that Sevy would be tabling this year and knew he was the artist I wanted to take on our inaugural Green Lantern Challenge. So without further ado, here is the reveal video we uploaded directly to our Twitter page (https://twitter.com/PopCultHQ) for you to enjoy. Now, stepping up with the first submission to PopCultHQ’s Green Lantern Challenge…Phillip Sevy!

I’d like to personally, and professionally, thank Phillip for the absolutely stunning commission and for partaking in our first Green Lantern Challenge! To see more of Sevy’s work, visit his website and social media outlets (listed below).
