The Indie Game Showcase has come a long way since its debut at Emerald City Comic Con a decade ago. Designed to give independent developers a vital entry point into major conventions, the showcase has finally arrived at the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2)—and Retrofit Games Company is proud to be part of the inaugural lineup.
In a world where convention schedules are packed tight, Retrofit is making waves with their One Session Games (OSG) philosophy. These are high-octane adventures designed for fans who love tabletop gaming but lack the time for long campaigns that can go for years. In an OSG session, you can create a character and finish a complete story in just three hours. It’s the perfect solution for the busy gaming enthusiast, though the games are dynamic enough to be strung together into an episodic campaign for those who want more.
The star of their booth is WHITE CITY, Retrofit’s flagship title. Set during the 1893 World’s Fair, the game casts players as occult investigators patrolling for supernatural threats. Billed as “The Alienist meets Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,” it’s the official RPG of the 1893 World’s Fair. The game is impressively streamlined, featuring a one-page rule set and an onboarding document that gets a full table playing in just 15 minutes.
The game includes ten scenarios, so it has at least thirty hours of gameplay. Furthermore, the individual adventures are driven by open ended questions, so every adventure can be replayed. The game is designed for busy people that may not have time for a campaign. We call our play style, “Play When You Can.”
