Sunday was the third day of Fan Fest Events, formerly known as Walker Stalker and Heroes and Villains Fan Fest. Unfortunately, it is also Easter Sunday, which means that the convention has some pretty heavy competition. On top of that, it was probably the nicest day (weather-wsie) we have seen in Chicago for a long time.
When I got to the parking lot, it didn’t bode well for the event. I found parking on the second level, near the doors. If you’ve ever gone to an event at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, then you know that you typically don’t even start looking for parking spaces until the third level.
When I entered the foyer it was once again a ghost town, even ticketing was dead. There was no security, and only one bored looking volunteer on bag check.
The aisles weren’t much better. In fact, several vendors had already packed up and left. Even the T-mobile booth was void of obnoxious sales people.
Even the celebrity lines were pretty short, which gave fans a fantastic opportunity to actually meet and talk with some of their favorites.
Despite all this, or maybe because of it, it was an enjoyable event. It’s not Fan Fest that made it enjoyable, it was the people. The vendors that remained were chatty, the patrons were gushing about the opportunities they had with the celebs, and the cosplayers were friendly and eager to show their love of fandoms.
