The horror smash hit lives again! When the corpse of Galactus appears at the edge of Earth’s solar system, the Avengers, X-Men and Fantastic Four investigate. Too late, they discover that the World-Eater’s body is now the vessel of an interstellar terror – which one by one transforms Earth’s Mightiest Heroes into ravenous undead zombies! Now, the world’s remaining defenders must try to escape the super-powered, cannibalistic aberrations that were once their friends and family – but will any survive? Spider-Man made a promise to keep people safe, and he’s not going to quit – even in the literal jaws of death. But the cost of keeping his promises may be horribly high! Can Earth’s hunted heroes hope to protect the planet from an infestation that has already claimed half the known universe?
PopCultHQ’s Comic Book Review:
MARVEL ZOMBIES: RESURRECTION TPB
The zombies are back! And they are taking the Marvel Universe by storm again. Armies of the the formerly heroic dead now walk the Earth, eating all in their wake. And at the heart of it all, dark secrets await the valiant few who have survived thus far. A veritable mystery waiting to be read and solved. So if you dare, step inside, walk this way. And be prepared.
Writing: Philip Kennedy Johnson takes the concept of Marvel Zombies to a whole new level in this TPB. Not only does he give us a world where there are more personal deep-dives into the survivors, but also into the “why” of this latest iteration of the zombification of the Marvel Universe. Five unstoppable issues of pulse-pounding, nightmare-inducing perfection. Every page of this book is loaded with action, horror, and rich world-building, a superpowered frightfest for sure.
Art: Artwork for horror comics, especially zombie ones, treads a very fine line. The art is either very much in the face of the readers or plays it safe and goes for minimal messiness. Leonard Kirk manages to find that happy medium wherein there is the right balance. Amidst all the gore, guts, and mayhem, there are the moments, artistically, that highlight the struggles and development of those characters who have survived thus far. Leonard achieves this balance excellently in a smooth and elegant manner.
Colors: A job well done on colors by this terrific twosome of GURU-eFX and Rachelle Rosenberg. Disturbing, dynamic, and delightful. Colors perfectly paired together to paint patterns of perfectly horrid horrors. Everything accentuates and enhances the artwork and aids the setting of the ghastly scene that is a revitalized Marvel Zombie universe.
Letters: Travis went to town on the lettering for this series. Every time a zombified figure speaks, there is an eerie and horrific vibe that seems to penetrate from within. Like the soundtrack to a very suspenseful movie. Every character, whether they are un-dead or alive, carries the full weight of who they are and pours it out of the page all because of Travis’s bang-up job as letterer.
PopCultHQ’s overall assessment:
While it may at times seem like the concept of Marvel Zombies has been done to death (pun intended), this feels like a true resurrection and is not just a clever title. A new creative team takes on the challenge of presenting a whole new story, with fresh frights to fill the nightmares of readers. An impactful new beginning, that will hopefully lead to more in the coming years.
