And before the night is over, she may end her life….Meanwhile, the Gravediggers trap Cody Bloom. He was the Black Temple’s previous prophet before he escaped. To find Cole’s daughter and stop the coming apocalypse, Morphea will have to enter Bloom’s drug-addled mind and unlock the secrets of the Dark Gods. Oversized finale of the first arc!

PopCultHQ’s Comic Book Review:
The Gravediggers Union #5

Writing:

Wes brings truths to light for the Gravediggers, for Morphea, and for Morgan. The Black Temple seeks the Third Seal and the Gravediggers aim to stop them and save Morgan as well. Things build to a head in this issue and it will lead to an explosive and powerful showdown between the two groups thanks to Wes’s story direction.

Art:

For this issue, both Wes and Toby slow things down and pick things up for the artwork. The energy from Wes’s pages embodies that same fierceness for all the flashbacks that help build the story. Toby’s artwork adds more volume and depth, providing blocks that help to build upon the existing art and story he and Wes have provided.

Niko is really cranking out amazing coloring for the series, especially here in issue #5. Notably with things like the fur of the space ape, or the color choices for the action pages between the Union and some more denizens of the undead. It’s a rich panoply of color mania throughout the book and it will be exciting to see what colors Niko employs for the finale.

For Jared, the lettering here has taken on a very serious turn. Morgan’s internal thoughts especially, as she contemplates her actions as the prophet for the Black Temple. It allows readers to see inside her mind, to see what she is thinking and feeling while making choices that will lead to the end of all life on Earth. This sort of deep digging is only through Jared and his fine work.

PopCultHQ’s overall assessment:

Everyone is poised for the end of all things. Morgan and the Black Temple celebrate the final moments, while the Gravediggers seek answers to find Cole’s daughter and thwart the Temple’s plans for world destruction. Action, with intense plot escalation and more, await within.

PopCultHQ’s Rating:

5 Out of 5 Stars
