From New York Times bestselling Mind MGMT creator Matt Kindt and Black Hammers David Rubin comes this fantasy adventure about a science-minded hero intent on keeping the balance between Earth and a magic world!
As Boone Dias and his team get closer to closing the breaches between Ether and Earth, they find themselves pitted against terrifying Spider Golems, AT-AT-sized sphinxes, and living anthropomorphic monster-mummies!
PopCultHQ’s Comic Book Review:
ETHER: COPPER GOLEMS #3
Opening this comic, I was greeted with one of the most metal things to meet my eyes in all of sequential art: A minotaur skydiving into a volcano. There were so many questions that needed to be answered, so much inquisition, I absolutely needed to continue after being utterly gobsmacked by such an opener. What I got was him landing on a robot spider, powered by arcane vacuum tubes…This is the reason I read comic books.
Writing:
Kindt’s writing has always been a standout to me. While he cuts to the bone with logic one cannot ignore, he softens it with an unexpectedly human touch to his characters. The original Ether was one of my favorite blind buys of 2017. It has been a joy to see how Kindt’s writing style of proposing science to the sorcerous, cut with the tale of a man giving up everything, continue.
That style and unique dialogue he presents for all of the characters as they journey through the Ether to find the source of the portals is a standout. Each one stands out in my memory, both in mannerism and design. Boone himself is a character I hold up with memorable, modern comic heroes as he is one without preternatural ability beyond that of curiosity and determination.
Art:
What I love about this duo is how well thought-out each book’s design has been. The usage of unique panel layouts and strategic splash pages can almost be a class in comic storytelling. Newcomers will be lost momentarily, but can be caught up in the excitement of the cadence of the actions presented!
Rubin has always had an interesting palette and design to his art. Even the still shots that he makes look like they have the potential to explode into sudden kinesis. If I were to offer any criticism, it would be on a couple of pages of characters deciding on action with some trepidation. Still, that is a nit to be picked on the otherwise perfect flow of this book
PopCultHQ’s overall assessment:
Kindt has been a favorite for a long time, with good reason, and Rubin has rapidly started to fill my shelves with books like Sherlock Frankenstein. This is a series I’ve been champing at the bit to continue, as the duo dropped hints on Twitter of it continuing on. If you’re a science-minded individual, or a fantasy-loving one, pick this up, you might find yourself buying the rest quite quickly as I did.
PopCultHQ’s Rating:
4.5 out of 5 Stars
