IKEA Shares How To Make Your Own ‘Game of Thrones’ Cape

When you see the costumes on HBO’s Game of Thrones, you may think that they cost hundreds or thousands of dollars and are likely made from hard-to-find items, right? While that may be true for some of them, others are as easy to make as taking a trip to your local IKEA store.

Last week, we learned that the Night’s Watch capes are made from sheepskin IKEA rugs. This information was related last year by head costume designer Michele Clapton during a talk at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, but seems to have only made its way into public knowledge recently. The exact item is the store SKOLD rug, and only costs $79.

Not one to miss a beat, IKEA released a set of instructions so that you can make one of your own. “We take anything we can; we cut and we shave them and then we added strong leather straps,” Clapton said, “I want the audience to almost smell the costumes.”

While the costume department’s process was a little more involved than what IKEA provided, the instructions provide a good starting point for any cosplayers wanting to make their own Night’s Watch outfit.

Below you can see the entirety of Clapton’s talk.
