[Wrestling] AEW Revolution Main Event Botch

AEW Main Event Botch

*** WARNING: This article contains spoilers
for the main event at AEW Revolution***

The main event at AEW Revolution was highly-promoted anticipated. This was for the AEW World Title between Kenny Omega and Jon Moxley. This wasn’t any ordinary bout, as it was billed as an “Exploding Barbed Wire Death Match.” They advertised it as violent, bloody, and brutal.

What made this death match different is there was a countdown timer and when it reached zero, the ring would explode. The ring looked impressive, it was set-up with barbed wire and tripwires on the ropes. There were doors with barbed wire set-up inside the ring as well. Props were laid around too.

The match itself was impressive and lived up to the hype. Kenny and Moxley were cut up and bleeding throughout the match. At the end of the bout, it was Kenny who emerged victorious with the help of his friends, the Good Brothers. As the clock counted down to one more minute left, the Good Brothers handcuffed Moxley so he couldn’t move. Then, after a few last minute kicks and punches on Moxley, the three Elite members ran away.

To the surprise of everyone, it was Eddie Kingston who ran into the ring to save Moxley. Kingston and Moxley have been rivals in the past, but this moment turned Kingston from a heel to a face. It was very touching to see Kingston try to pull Moxley out of the ring. With less then 10 seconds left there was nothing left to do but to jump on top of Moxley to save him.

The crowd held their breath as the timer went to 0. Suddenly, four sparklers, some smoke effects, and small fireworks size explosion went off. When it was done, Kingston and Moxley laid there as if they died.

There was silence for a second as the crowd anticipated there was more. Then we all thought that maybe the Elite would come out and laugh as if this was a prank. Soon, the hard boos were heard from from the crowd and a lot of angry shouts and curses demanding a refund.

It was clearly a botch. Sadly, it could not have happened at a worse time. The internet was already flooded with comments and memes about how bad this PPV ended. Hardcore WWE fans cheered for joy as their rival made a huge mistake that can’t be covered up easily.

While watching the show live, you could tell that something was off. During the middle of the match, the wrong music played and the titan tron screened the wrong image. That usually is a small, forgivable error, but it was foretelling of things to come. The crew had set up a lot around the ring. Kenny and Omega never hit those spots in the ring and neither was thrown on the floor onto them. The audience thought that all of those were saved for the big explosion at the end. Apparently not.

After the show went off air, Jon Moxley grabbed a microphone and said, “Kenny Omega may be a tough son of a b****, but he can’t make an exploding ring worth a s***! I’ve seen more dangerous s***on MTV’s Ridiculousness, what the f*** was that?” He then went on to thank the fans for coming to the show.

Tony Khan, in a post show interview. had this to say, “Kenny’s master plan, he built a dud. Who would have thought when he drew up the big plan with crayons that the bomb failed to take both guys out. The battle really delivered, excellent action. Both guys came out okay, which is great because on paper, it looked like the kind of match where somebody could get hurt.” He also said, “The plans we saw in crayon, and all through the match, we saw it. It looked very cool, and it’s a very deadly, painful match, but at the end, I mean, I don’t know what people really wanted, unless you actually wanted us to explode the guys at the end. There’s only so much you can do. So without blowing the ring and both guys up, I think the basic explanation is that Kenny’s ring set to explode, his plan, as a heel, to build this thing with a hammer and nails as we saw, the final bomb just didn’t go off.”

With these answers, it is clear the AEW team are already in the works to try to turn this botch into part of the overall story line. What could work is that earlier in the week, Kenny Omega posted on his Twitter account a childish doodle of the ring. It looked like a silly blueprint. AEW may try to spin this botch and make it look like it is Kenny’s fault. Since Kenny is the one that “built this ring”; at the end, he really didn’t know what he was doing and that’s why nothing worked. Another angle is Kenny could have purposely made the ring not go off because he wanted to prank and humiliate Moxley. He wanted to make Moxley feel like a fool. Kenny’s current persona is a crazy and delusional champion, so this spin could work.

Both of these angles could be a reasonable fix, but what is harder to cover is why are Eddie Kingston and Jon Moxley dead? They sold that explosion as if a huge bomb went off.  It did not help that the commentators also acted like that explosion was big. It will not be easy, but it has been suggested online that AEW could say Kingston covered his eyes as the timer went down to 0. As a result he didn’t see that the explosion didn’t go off. He thought he was going to die so he passed out due to stress and fear.

AEW will address this in full this Wednesday on Dynamite. It will be interesting to see how they will spin this mistake. Fans online have already rated this mishap as one of the worst in wrestling history. AEW has had errors in the past, but was able to cover them up in funny ways on their main shows and on their YouTube shows (Being the Elite).

We’ll see what happens here.
