PopCultHQ was on-hand for all three days covering this year’s Rose City Comic Con. The convention was packed with talented creators from across the comic book community. As with most conventions in which I cover, I create a “plan of attack,” if you will. Basically, I plan on a set number of creators with whom I’d like to connect and provide some sort of media coverage/exposure. Though I did capture three Cruisin’ Comic Con w/ Creators video features (David Pepose, Dave Dwonch, and Kelly Fitzpatrick), along with our first Green Lantern Challenge (ft. Phillip Sevy) and one upcoming New Comic Book Day promo (w/ PORT OF EARTH’s Zack Kaplan), I lined up two video interviews for this event…Dan Parent of Archie Comics fame and Source Point Press‘ breakout sensation, writer Frank Gogol.
At this year’s Comic Con International: San Diego 2019, I first bumped into Frank at the Source Point Press booth. He was on-hand with an SDCC variant for the first issue of DEAD END KIDS, which was scheduled to release July 31st. The dark coming-of-age murder mystery, which takes place in the 90s, was already generating some great advance buzz amongst the comic book community. Having made an impact in the industry with a successfully funded Kickstarter campaign for his anthology GRIEF in 2017, and subsequent publishing by SPP in 2018, little did he know that 2019 was going to be a banner year for the creator.
Check out the trailer for Gogol’s DEAD END KIDS:
For D.E.K., Frank partnered again with fellow GRIEF creators artist Nenad Cviticanin and letterer Sean Rinehart for the 3-issue miniseries. This new title has been the talk of the indie community, with each issue selling out its initial print run and additional printings made to meet the demand.
Just prior to Rose City Comic Con 2019, Frank received even more accolades when his GRIEF anthology was nominated for a Ringo Award! Selling out of your comic book is great in and of itself for any creator. Adding the Ringo nod for Best Anthology just validates the talent behind this writing force you need to be checking out. So I was elated when Frank agreed to be interviewed by me and PopCultHQ to discuss his projects and rise on the indie scene. So sit back and enjoy as I chat with writing superstar Frank Gogol at the Source Point Press booth at this year’s Rose City Comic Con!
A very special thanks to Frank for taking the time out to chat with us about his work. Be sure to follow Frank Gogol for the latest that the rising writer has to offer, and check out the big things happening at Source Point Press. If you happen to be in or around New York City the first week/weekend in October, you can meet Frank at this year’s New York Comic Con at the Source Point Press booth (#2243) where he’ll have an EXCLUSIVE NYCC edition of DEAD END KIDS #1 available (in limited quantities!) featuring cover art from Reilly Brown and colorist Matt Herms. He’ll also be doing an LCS mini-signing tour throughout the Big Apple. Check the below images for details!
