“Pants Optional” is PopCultHQ’s Zoom video interview feature where we connect with individuals within the comic book community. It’s a way to see/hear what creators have been doing during the pandemic, projects which may be in motion, and noteworthy events and happenings taking place in lieu of conventions, appearances, and the weekly NCBD grind.
For Episode XXXV, I spoke with writer Mark Sable (Miskatonic, Graveyard of Empires). Teamed with artist Chris Anderson (Heavy Metal; Creepshow; Lost Angels), the duo have created CHAOTIC NEUTRAL, an all-new 48-page comic book first issue inspired by the old school fantasy roleplaying games that worried parents and teachers alike. CHAOTIC NEUTRAL delivers magic, adventure, and storytelling—with an edge.

CHAOTIC NEUTRAL’s extra-length debut issue introduces Alptraum, a town surrounded by an impenetrable forest and located by ancient, cyclopean ruins. Despite its proximity to danger, Alptraum has never been invaded, because of a secret pact by the town’s Prince Bishop providing human sacrifices to a Satanic cult…
`
A young farmer by the name of Stellan pines for Isabella, the Prince Bishop’s beautiful daughter. Stellan has ideas for a happy ending, both for Alptraum and for himself. So he hires adventurers to stop the cult, only to see the Satanists burn the village and take the most vulnerable villagers hostage. Now Stellan must lead a diverse but seemingly ordinary band of peasants to rescue their loved ones as they venture into the unknown. Will he succeed? This is no hero’s journey….
And CHAOTIC NEUTRAL is more than just a comic. Mark has written an official CHAOTIC NEUTRAL Adventure Module that you can play using most old school fantasy games.
CHAOTIC NEUTRAL Kickstarter Tiers
The CHAOTIC NEUTRAL: Monster Trading Cards are illustrated by superstar artists Max Dunbar (Dungeons & Dragons), Jeremy Haun (Haunthology), Maan House (Godkillers), Jeff Johnson (Boondocks), Tom Neely (The Humans), Dan Panosian (Slots), Jim Rugg (Mtsryr: Octobriana 1976), Tim Seeley (Money Shot) and Kyle Strahm (Spread).
