“Pants Optional” is PopCultHQ’s Zoom video interview feature where we connect with individuals within the comic book community. It’s a way to see/hear what creators have been doing during the pandemic, projects which may be in motion during this downtime, and noteworthy events and happenings taking place in lieu of conventions, appearances, and the weekly NCBD grind.
For Episode XXVI, I spoke with Karla Nappi. The writer brings her sci-fi title DUPLICANT back to Kickstarter for issue four. After successful campaigns for the first three issues, the comic creator had the series picked up by Second Sight Publishing, which will be responsible for getting physical copies of DUPLICANT to local comic shops and eventually bookstores for the collected edition. Karla’s current offering is the penultimate issue of the five-issue story arc, making it prime to be setting up a thrilling conclusion. For people new to DUPLICANT, Nappi’s campaign offers you the opportunity to catch up on prior issues so you can see for yourself why the hype is real! Here’s a look at DUPLICANT #4 – which is LIVE on Kickstarter through March 4th.

At its heart, Duplicant is a thriller about the forces conspiring against the one man who offers hope during a pandemic. That one man is Matt Travers, a scientist who creates duplicate organs that saves humanity from the organ failure contagion – only their high cost forces people into indentured servitude. In answer to this, a dangerous black market arises which is run by a religious fanatic and Matt’s former mentor.
Following Matt’s deadly encounter with a “Duplicant,” a recipient of his technology, Matt’s life blows up. He comes to question everything he knows as he strives to learn the truth behind his encounter, and along the way uncovers an even bigger mystery about the fate of mankind.
Issue 4 finds Matt with an unexpected ally, and a bombshell revelation could upend everything he once knew to be true. Meanwhile Robert has a crisis of faith; Sean tries to connect with his family; and Ava continues the hunt for the mole.
