[TV News] ‘Blade Runner’ Anime Series Coming to Adult Swim

As we saw with last year’s Blade Runner 2049, there is much yet to be seen of director Ridley Scott’s neo-noir science fiction future of Earth. And with a significant time gap between the original film and the sequel, there are many more stories yet to tell.

Adult Swim and anime streaming service Crunchyroll are teaming up with Alcon Television Group to create an Engligh-dubbed anime series set in the world of Blade Runner. The series will comprise of 13 half-hour episodes and takes place in 2032, including several character already known to fans. As such, the anime series, takes places in the years between Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049, making it both a sequel and prequel at the same time.

The unnamed series will air on Adult Swim as part of its Toonami block of programming. Senior Vice President and Adult Swim creative director Jason DeMarco said in a statement,

“I first saw Blade Runner in 1982, at age 11. It has remained one of the defining films of my life. To be able to explore more of this universe, with the incredible talent we have on board, is a dream come true.”

Sae Whan Song, head of business development for Crunchyroll added,

Blade Runner is a seminal work, and its influence permeates the genre. Adult Swim shares our excitement to bring this new series to fans, and we’re looking forward to building on this franchise together.”
