Disney has been ramping up the releases of its revamped live-action versions of classic Disney films. Three are set to come out next year including Dumbo, Aladdin, and The Lion King. The first two have already had trailers released, and yesterday it was The Lion King‘s turn, premiering during the Washington and Dallas football game on Thanksgiving.
The film is directed by Jon Favreau, who also directed 2016’s The Jungle Book. It includes the voice talents of Donald Glover as Simba, Beyonce Knowles-Carter as Nala, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, John Oliver as Zazu, and James Earl Jones reprising his role as Mufasa.
The official synopsis for the movie is as follows:
“From Disney Live Action, director Jon Favreau’s all-new The Lion King journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his.”
Yesterday also gave us the first official poster for the movie, showing a young Simba putting his own paw in the print of his father’s.
The Lion King is due to be released July 19, 2019.
