1888 – Drinking straw was patented by Marvin Chester Stone of Washington D.C.

1906 – Willis Carrier receives a US patent for the world’s first air conditioner

1920 – Isaac Asimov, the father of Science Fiction, was born

1941 – The Andrew Sisters recorded “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” with Decca Records. It was a classic World War II hit.

1959 – Luna 1 was launched by the Soviet Union. This was the first man-made object to reach the escape velocity of the Earth.
