[Comics] Eisner-Winning PUBLIC DOMAIN’s In-Universe Comic Book THE DOMAIN Launches in July

The New York Times bestselling, multiple award winning writer Chip Zdarsky (Newburn, Batman), fan-favorite artist Rachael Stott (Fantastic Four, Dr. Who) and stellar colorist Eren Angiolini (Justice League: Last Ride) bring fans of the Eisner Award winning series Public Domain its comic-book-within-the-comic-book in the upcoming new title, The Domain. This five-issue miniseries is the in-universe comic book at the center of the Public Domain series and will launch this July from Image Comics.

In the pages of Public Domain, Syd Dallas and the team at Dallas Comics reimagine their classic character The Domain for a new audience, and… this is that comic!

THE DOMAIN #1 - Cover A

“When I realized that my characters from Public Domain would be creating a new superhero comic, I just knew I had to actually make that comic! It was an opportunity to create a fun, classic superhero comic while also enhancing the narrative of Public Domain and those characters’ journeys,” said Zdarsky. “But to do it right I needed a great art team who could pull off a kinetic, explosive superhero style, and Rachael Stott and Eren Angiolini are the perfect fit for this story. The only problem has been that fact that they’re too good and have, in fact, made Public Domain look bad by comparison. I did this to myself!”

Stott added: “Every single time I get to work with Chip Zdarsky I feel like the luckiest artist in comics—we’ve worked in his sexy Sex Criminals universe on the Sexual Gary Annual, and then an equally sexy Spider-Man one shot, but now we get to create a world and characters together for Domain. Every (sexy) page has been a joy and delight to draw. And sexy. Then add Eren Angiolini into that equation and you have a dream project. They are one of the most talented colourists working today, and I’m so lucky to get to collaborate with them again. I love being a part of this team, and we’ve made a really cool, beautiful book together and I’m so proud excited for people to read it. Chip, did I say sexy enough? How many times did you say it would take to get the book on Oprah’s book club?”

THE DOMAIN #1 - Cover B

In the upcoming The Domain, three best friends discover a crashed UFO and uncover technology that imbues them with incredible abilities. But there’s a catch: only one of them can use the powers at a time! Can their friendship survive the power’s temptation?

The Domain promises a classic superhero story for those coming in fresh, and a fun meta story for readers of Public Domain.

“Do you know what is better than working with Chip Zdarsky on Justice League and better than working with Rachael Stott on Doctor Who? Working with BOTH Chip AND Rachael on a fun, cosmic adventure filled with badass characters and handsome aliens,” said Angiolini. “I had a wonderful time colouring this series and I couldn’t be prouder of the result! Also, they let me go wild with illustrating the TTRPG variant covers! Pretty cool, right?!”

Select praise for the Public Domain series:

“Very good at pace, character, and the tensions between characters. At its heart this is a family story, but that family happens to have ties to comics and by extension comic movies based on them. Those elements come together in a narrative that’s relatable to our current climate of comics and superhero ‘mythology,’ adding up to an enjoyable story.”

“Perfect satirizing and condemnation of some of the worst aspects of the
comic book industry as told by someone within the machine.”
Multiversity Comics

“This is a familiar history to anyone who knows the history of Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Bill Finger, or dozens of others, and it would be easy to utilize nearly a century of mistreatment and unethical dealings to romanticize or rage. However, in staging this story, creator Chip Zdarsky opts to focus on the whys and wherefores, avoiding easy answers on what promises to be a much more engaging consideration of culture and commerce.”

Public Domain deserves to be on your pull-list, as it’ll do what Jack Kirby promised comics to do, which is to break your heart, kid. But in the same breath, it’ll also reinforce everything that makes comics great, and remind you that they, and the people that make them, are worth fighting for.”
Comic Watch

“This one comes highly recommended.”
Major Spoilers

“Tackles the major issue of creators’ rights in a funny yet heartfelt way and continues to cement Chip Zdarsky as one of the most interesting creators in the industry. If you’ve loved Zdarsky’s other creator-owned work or his Daredevil run, I highly suggest picking this book up.”
But Why Tho? Podcast

“Zdarsky has a unique and entertaining visual style that
beautifully emphasizes the characters and their emotions in the moment.

Chip Zdarsky is the current writer of Batman for DC Comics, somehow. For Image Comics he’s the writer of Newburn and the writer/illustrator of the award-winning Public Domain.

His previous work includes an acclaimed run on Daredevil and Spider-Man: Life Story for Marvel, and he’s the illustrator of Image Comics’ Sex Criminals, an Eisner Award winning series and New York Times bestseller (despite all the penis jokes).

Rachael Stott is a comic book artist first, and a novice space explorer second. She has drawn some of the most iconic fictional worlds of our time, including Fantastic Four, X-Men, Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Sex Criminals, and is the co-creator and artist of Motherlands from Vertigo. She lives in the UK in a hole in the ground. Like a hobbit. Except it’s just a literal hole in the wintery earth. With a WiFi connection.

Eren Angiolini is a comic colourist and fantasy artist. They’ve worked on some of the most popular titles in the industry, like Justice League, Doctor Who, and Sex Criminals (with Chip and Rachael! Go team!). Angiolini brings together their passion for comics and TTRPGs colouring the Critical Role: MIghty Nein Origins graphic novels. When they’re not colouring or drawing, they hit people with swords (seriously!).
