Take Your Collection With You! – Best Digital Sources For Comic Books

Digital Comic Books

If you are like me, comic books can come in any form and I will still have love and admiration for them.  New, used, torn, coverless, and digital are all acceptable forms for any comic purist.  With the advancement in technology, and people looking for convenience and simplicity, digital comics have grown to become a popular choice for many.  Can’t get to your LCS this week? On vacation but want to keep up with the latest issues?  Searching for a cheaper means to get your fix?  Digital comic books available through apps can satisfy your cravings.  We will look at the different options at your disposal.

If you prefer to use apps on your smartphone, tablet or laptop, both Marvel and DC have you covered with access to the latest releases the day they hit newsstands.  The Marvel app for Android and iOS offers new comics for about $4 each, gives you free back-up through a Marvel.com account, and you’ll have access to thousands of comics.  Often you can find deals for $0.99 – $1.99 per issue.

For the DC fan, the app for Android and iOS are pretty similar with their offerings.

The most popular choice by readers is Comixology’s app.  Comixology offers over 50,000 digital comic books at your fingertips.  Create a free account them and receive emails containing the latest deals and specials.  Often times you can purchase from their enormous library for $0.99 each.  They also give you access to many publishers: Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, Vertigo and more!  The only drawback to this service is that unlike the other mentioned apps, you are unable to purchase titles from the app itself.  It will redirect you to their website to order, at which time you can download it to your Android or iOS app from them.

If buying single issues aren’t your thing, there are options for you as well.  Marvel Unlimited offers an app for Android and iOS as well.  This subscription service gives you access to over 15,000 comics for a flat $9.99 per month.

So what do you prefer?  Are you old school and have to have the individual issues in hand?  Is digital the way of the future?  Or do you like having the actual comic for collecting purposes and the digital to actually read?  Let us know in the comments!
