[TV News] “Make It So!” – Sir Patrick Stewart to Reprise ‘Star Trek’ Role

For seven seasons and four films, Captain Jean-Luc Picard served the USS Enterprise as its captain. Star Trek: Nemesis might have been the last time we saw him, but it seems that actor Sir Patrick Stewart is not quite finished playing the Starfleet captain.

Today at Star Trek Las Vegas, it was announced that Patrick Stewart would reprise his role as Picard in a new Star Trek series for CBS All Access. Star Trek: Discovery co-creator Alex Kurtzman made the announcement at the convention today and was joined onstage by Stewart, who confirmed the good news.

Stewart also released the following statement on social media:

I will always be very proud to have been a part of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with Star Trek had run its natural course. It is, therefore, an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Seeking out new life for him, when I thought that life was over.

During these past years, it has been humbling to hear stories about how The Next Generation brought people comfort, saw them through difficult periods in their lives or how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration and leadership. I feel I’m ready to return to him for the same reason – to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times. I look forward to working with our brilliant creative team as we endeavor to bring a fresh, unexpected and pertinent story to life once more.

At this time, no other details about the series is known, but in the immortal words of Captain Picard, “Make it so.”

[Streaming] Jon Favreau to Lead Live-Action ‘Star Wars’ Series

As one of the most successful franchises ever, Star Wars spans books, movies, games, and even television series. The best part about a television series is that it has the time to develop and tell stories that would not otherwise fit into the constraints of a movie. With the end of Star Wars: Rebels earlier this week, fans have been wondering if there would be yet another Star Wars television series.

Lucasfilm announced today that there indeed will be another Star Wars series. We don’t know what this series will be about, but we know who will help bring it to life. Jon Favreau, director of Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and The Jungle Book, will both produce and write the live-action series for Disney’s new streaming service.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy stated, “I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform. Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.”

Favreau is definitely a long-time fan of the sci-fi series. He had a voice role in Star Wars: Clone Wars, and has a part in the upcoming film Solo: A Star Wars Story. In reference to today’s announcement, Favreau said, “If you told me at 11 years old that I would be getting to tell stories in the Star Wars universe, I wouldn’t have believed you. I can’t wait to embark upon this exciting adventure.”

The untitled series does not yet have a release date.

Amazon Orders ‘Lord of the Rings’ TV Series

Last week, there were rumors that Amazon was interested in developing a television series for its Prime streaming service based off the world of author J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Today it was announced that Amazon had indeed picked up the series, making a multi-season production commitment to telling the story of Tolkien’s epic fantasy world known as Middle-Earth. The deal also includes the option of a potential spin-off series.

This would be the first television series based on Tolkien writings, as The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit were both turned into movie trilogies by director Peter Jackson. But would the series be a retelling of these stories? In a word, no.

What Could This Series Cover?

Tolkien’s writings on the world of Middle-Earth cover much more than just the events of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. His epic tale The Silmarillion covers thousands of years of history in the fantasy world, all taking place before Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. The Return of the King, the final book in the Lord of the Rings series has substantial appendices at the end, covering events that take place at before, during, and after the events of the series outside of the story’s main action. These could all be sources for the Amazon series.

However, the most likely situation would be that the series would take place either before The Hobbit, or between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.

In a Vanity Fair article last week, it was said that Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos was personally involved in the negotiations between the studio and the Tolkien Estate. Bezos is known to be a fan of high fantasy and science fiction, so it seems that he would greatly enjoy having his company involved with such a well-known fantasy story.

Matt Galsor, a representative of the Tolkien Estate, said, “We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings. Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”

Since the deal for the series has just been made, no cast or premiere date have been announced yet.

New Trailer for ‘Star Wars: Rebels’ Looks Grim but Hopeful

As we saw in a previous trailer for the final season, Grand Admiral Thrawn and the Empire are looking to crack down on the Rebellion. This latest trailer for the show’s final season shows that the threat to Sabine and Mandalore may be even more serious than we originally thought.

Thrawn claims to have a weapon that will bring the planet to its knees and swear loyalty to the Empire while we see Sabine mourning a loss. However, Ezra is not ready to give up the fight. He says this is how a rebellion starts – small, with a few people standing together. Bolstered, Sabine leads the charge carrying the Darksaber. The fight is far from over, and the Rebels characters won’t give up easily.

Season 4 of Star Wars: Rebels premieres October 16 with an hour-long episode on Disney XD.

‘Star Wars Rebels’ Announces Premiere Date In New Trailer

Over the past three seasons, the crew of The Ghost in Star Wars Rebels have gone from rabble-rousers thwarting the Empire at any opportunity, to members of the budding Rebel Alliance. It started with Ezra Bridger running into Hera Syndulla, Kannan Jarrus, and the others on Lothal, and has since taken them to all parts of the galaxy on their many missions. Along the way, they have encountered notable Star Wars characters such as Darth Vader, Asoka Tano, Saw Gerrera, R2-D2 and C-3PO, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Princess Leia, Yoda, Grand Admiral Thrawn, and many others, firmly cementing itself within the Star Wars universe.

4th Season

The upcoming fourth season has been announced to be the show’s final season, and in the recently released new trailer, it will premiere on Monday, October 16.

In the season 3 finale, the crew of The Ghost managed to survive a battle against the Empire at Atollon, escaping from Thrawn and making their way to the Rebel base on Yavin IV. The trailer for the new season shows that the fight against the Empire is getting much more fierce. Mandalore is placed on lockdown, while Sabine Wren works to muster a resistance among her people. Saw Guererra urges the Rebellion that they can no longer fight on the Empire’s terms, but Mon Mothma does not think they are ready for open war. Thrawn orders the capture of Captain Hera Syndulla. Ezra struggles with his own issues, and Kanan and Hera talk about plans for their future.

It is very likely that the end of the series could lead right into the events of Rogue One, given that we’ve already seen characters like Saw Gerrera and Grand Moff Tarkin. The above trailer also specifically references Orson Krennic and Stardust – the project name for the Death Star.

Season 4 of Star Wars Rebels premieres Monday, October 16 on Disney XD.

Author Tanith Lee Passes Away at the Age of 67

600full-tanith-leeScience Fiction has lost another great author. Tanith Lee, author of The Silver Metal Lover and Tales from the Flat Earth series passed away at the age of 67. She had a long writing career that started in 1971 when Macmillan published her first novel, The Dragon Hoard, and continued through over 90 novels and 300 short stories.

She was a dyslexic that couldn’t read until the age of 8 when her father took it upon himself to teach her and from there her love of the written language exploded.birthgraveLee was the first woman to win the British Fantasy award in 1980 for her novel Death’s Master, the second in the Tales from the Flat Earth series. In 1983 and 1984 Tanith Lee received World Fantasy Awards for Best Short Story. In 2013 and 2015 she was awarded Lifetime Achievement Awards from both the World Fantasy Convention and the Horror Writers Association.

She was also known for writing poetry, for BBC Radio plays and two episodes of the BBC’s sci-fi television series Blake’s 7.

Tanith Lee never stopped writing. In an interview with SF Magazine Locus she stated, ““If anyone ever wonders why there’s nothing coming from me, it’s not my fault. I’m doing the work. No, I haven’t deteriorated or gone insane. Suddenly, I just can’t get anything into print”

Ms.Lee’s website gives little on her passing, simply displaying the dates of her birth and death and a fitting quote;

“Though we come and go, and pass into the shadows, where we leave behind us stories told – on paper, on the wings of butterflies, on the wind, on the hearts of others – there we are remembered, there we work magic and great change – passing on the fire like a torch – forever and forever. Till the sky falls, and all things are flawless and need no words at all.”

She leaves behind a husband, John Kaiine who himself is an artist and writer.

Another great author has passed.
