[Spotlight] Action Lab Entertainment’s Danger Zone Imprint Celebrates 5 Year Anniversary!

Action Lab Entertainment made its initial entry into the comic book industry in 2011. The indie publisher quickly gained recognition for their all-ages offerings, especially the fantasy adventure series Princeless and the NFL-licensed Rush Zone. As they continued to produce all-ages material, they also were interested in titles and IPs which were intended for the mature readers out there. So the mad scientists at Action Lab decided to expand their library (and options) by creating an imprint for the more adult-themed comics. In 2013, a Kickstarter was run to create Action Lab: Danger Zone and the response was fantastic! The new line of books were to be comprised of a wide spectrum of genre-vexing and boundary-blasting creator-owned titles.

Initially the imprint kicked off with six titles and has grown to a massive catalog with over fifty titles in the past five years. This month, Action Lab is celebrating the 5-year achievement and PopCultHQ wanted to spotlight the publishing company for attaining the magnificent milestone. We spoke with publisher Jason Martin about the early beginnings of Danger Zone and the evolution it’s experienced growing to a successful imprint. We’re also giving you a look at their titles (with synopsis!) to get you in the know regarding their vast library.

PopCultHQ: Two years after the inception of Action Lab Entertainment, you took to Kickstarter to help launch your new, mature readers imprint Danger Zone. On April 23, 2013, the campaign was successfully funded and offered six books right out the gate: Ghost Town, The Final Plague, Night of the 80’s Undead, The Trip, Double Jumpers, and Zombie Tramp. What was the atmosphere like around the Action Lab Entertainment offices once you knew your desire to publish creator-owned, mature reader comics was going to be a reality? How did it feel seeing that kind of support from fans and the community who believed in what you were doing?

Jason Martin: Action Lab was already publishing creator-owned titles of every variety, at that time though they were becoming known for all ages titles, with the Eisner nomination on Princeless and the NFL Rush Zone License. So they needed to put the mature books within a separate imprint, and I was good friends with co-founder Dave Dwonch, and we’d been talking and realized it was a great opportunity for me to take what I was doing and bring that to ALE.

I started out self publishing (my series Super Real), and then ventured into creator-owned publishing with my Super Real Graphics imprint, which last released Dan Mendoza‘s Zombie Tramp volume one. So when I came aboard, we brought Zombie Tramp volume two and paired it with the other mature rated Action Lab titles and the launch for Danger Zone was born!

We also thought a Kickstarter was a good opportunity to help kick things off and promote the line. It’s hard to believe that was already 5 years ago!!

PopCultHQ: Danger Zone has released a slew of titles, worked with numerous creators, and has left its imprint (pun maybe intended?) on the comic book community. When your mature readers line officially kicked off, who were the core members that helped with its launch? What does the staffing look like now five years later?

Jason Martin: Yeah, we’ve been fortunate to have an amazing run of creator-owned titles come through the imprint to date, and have turned Zombie Tramp into its own licensed franchise. The core Action Lab group that was there at the start is primarily still in place (myself, Bryan Seaton our CEO, Shawn Gabborin our EIC, and Shawn Pryor and Dave Dwonch have shifted roles but are still on board), but we’ve had numerous talented individuals come and go too along the way, helping make these books a reality for the many talented creators.

What many people don’t know about Action Lab, is that it was founded by a group of fans and creators with talents that together offered the range of skills needed to run a comic company. And from the beginning, it’s been a passion project that folks have worked on, by and large, in addition to their regular lives. Which is very much like a comic book origin story isn’t it? Like a publishing Voltron, that fights for comics by night!

Now, we’ve come a long way since then (Eisner nominations, Diamond top 20 publisher and exclusivity, television and movie options, year over year growth) but we’re still unique in that way. A company by creators, for creators… building and striving toward joining the ranks of the top tier comics publishers.

PopCultHQ: Danger Zone has worked closely with Full Moon Features to produce comics based on their properties, such as Puppet Master, Trancers, and the recently-released title Subspecies. What do you enjoy most about working with a production company like Full Moon? Can we expect more titles, sequels, or spin-offs from their properties?

Jason Martin: We’ve loved working with Full Moon, and offering books from their extensive catalog, from creatives who are passionate fans for their titles. Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Gray, Tim Seeley, Cullen Bunn, Brockton McKinney, and our own Shawn Gabborin are all huge fans that relished the opportunity to bring those titles to comics (and some for the first time), and produced great comics that stood on their own and tied faithfully to the films. But right now we’re closing out that chapter on a high note with the recent Puppet Master: Curtain Call series that wrapped up the years long Action Lab Danger Zone comic series, the aforementioned Subspecies mini by Bunn and Daniel J. Logan, and the trip-tastic Gingerdead Man Meets Evil Bong!!

PopCultHQ: Zombie Tramp, which has endured the test of time and is essentially (imho) your tentpole character/series, has become synonymous with the Danger Zone brand. Vampblade, and then later DollFace and Black Betty, being integrated into the “Zombie Tramp Universe” has really rounded out the easily-identifiable badass babes at the imprint. How important is it for Danger Zone to maintain and grow this universe in the years ahead?

Jason Martin: What can I say about Zombie Tramp? It’s such a simple hook, you either love it or you don’t… and that’s what’s so great about it! For me, I love genre works that challenge the limits, and that’s what Zombie Tramp embodies. Is it for everyone? Clearly, no. But if it is to your taste, it’s damn tasty! And it also happens to be, aside from the surface trappings, a genuinely creative and engrossing read. Dan has built a great new modern mythology here that’s inspired by equal parts comics and film, horror and anime. He and I share similar sensibilities, and I myself as a creator too, have had the good fortune of contributing to the story some, as well as the production of the series for it’s entire now nearly four year run at Danger Zone. And yes, it’s popularity has spawned now several series within the same universe that all build and compliment the Zombie Tramp mythology. Books like my Vampblade series, and Dan and Bryan’s DollFace, and now Shawn Gabborin’s Black Betty (and the team up series Danger Doll Squad).

And yes, the book has been our most popular title in single issues, and so it’s certainly a key to the success of Danger Zone. But that said, with or without Zombie Tramp, the Danger Zone (like Action Lab) is home to a varied and impressive range of titles.

PopCultHQ: From its inception, Danger Zone has been hailed as the home to boundary-pushing, genre-redefining, quality creator-owned comic books with no limits. How true is that statement today? What are the imprint’s plans as it looks to continue to grow and evolve, and what, if anything, is different now than it was in 2013?

Jason Martin: That’s still very much the mission statement today. Quality, creative, genre-redefining comic books with no limits. But simply put, it’s just an extension of Action Lab, and that’s the same that could be said for any of our titles. The difference here with Danger Zone, is that we happen to be the imprint where the titles that would be rated-R live.

And then the only change from when we launched, is that now we’re also the home to the Full Moon and Zombie Tramp universe of books (just as Action Lab is home to Miraculous and other licenses in addition to creator-owned titles).

PopCultHQ: Already in 2018, you’ve launched new titles such as Black Betty, Baby Badass, and Subspecies, have nearly-released Gingerdead Man Meets Evil Bong and the third season for Vampblade, a new volume for Danger Doll Squad and Brigands (Ruin of Thieves), Double Jumpers is returning with a new run, and we’re leading up to the Death of Zombie Tramp event. What more could you possibly have planned for 2018?!

Jason Martin: Well, you pretty much covered all the high points for the first half of the year. But moving into the latter half of 2017 a huge event for us is the big 50th issue of Zombie Tramp that you mentioned in July. And that will also kick into gear a year-long event in the series, The Death of Zombie Tramp, that will pay off everything that we’ve been building towards in the book to date… and that’s exciting! But yes, we also have new creator-owned series lined up for each month as well: Ruin of Thieves from Ram V, Aberrant by Ryland Grant, Guncats, Twelve Devils Dancing, the list goes on and on). Lots and lots of great comics, for every taste. As always, stuff that we’re truly excited to release!

PopCultHQ: In retrospect, seeing all that has grown and blossomed at Danger zone over the last five years, what does the next five look like? Could we eventually see more titles making a return to the imprint?

Jason Martin: We do have some returning titles on the near horizon. There is a Brigands sequel from Ram V (Paradiso), Ruin of Thieves starting this May. We’ll also have Voracious volume three from Markisan Naso and Jason Muhr later this year, as well as sequels to a couple of last years big hits for us; Spencer & Locke and Misbegotten down the line from that.

I wish I could say we had sequels to all our titles, but the market can be cruel. Titles that you’re sure will hit big can be passed by. Or books that do relatively well just aren’t viable for the creators to continue. It’s just a reality of the business. But we’ll keep championing these works, and we truly appreciate folks like yourself who take up the cause, and all the fans that support us and our titles. We couldn’t do it without you!

PopCultHQ: To whom or what do you credit the success of Danger Zone’s five years in operations (with no signs of slowing down)?

Jason Martin: The creators. It all starts with them.

We’ve had an amazing five year run, with so many titles of such variety and craft.

One of the best things about Action Lab and where we are in the industry, is that we offer opportunities to emerging talent, creators with raw talent and energy, with unique voices and inspired ideas. And then with Danger Zone, you get the ideas that are even more twisted or out there. We’ve had; gangster teddy bears, foul-mouthed drugged-out cartoon rabbits, animal zombies, dark magic zombies, killer puppets, violent magical girls, noir crime imaginary friends, dinosaur chefs, Jesus clones, domesticated Jesus and Satan, … the list goes on and on!! It’s been a wild ride! Here’s to the next five years!!

“Got Pounded“

Billy Bobtail is back as Cub! Upon hearing of the ambush of his beloved mentor Minerva, Billy ditches his Meowz persona and returns to the Cat Hole as the courageous Cub. Esmeralda, who is coming into her own as the Alfred Pennyworth of the superhero duo, tends to Cougar. But Billy won’t stand by as Minerva, his fellow brawler and bedroom buddy, lies beaten, battered, and bruised. No sir! This Cub demands punishment, and revenge is a dish best served cold.

But Megaville’s villainous Rogues see an opportunity with the unsuspecting sidekick now solo. Just as in each prior issue, the city’s cadre of criminals choose a character to challenge and combat the crime-fighting cats. In this episode, we meet the enormous Diaper Rash and his henchmen, The Tantrums!

Could this be the end of Cub at the hands of the Rogues? Will Cougar arrive in time to save her sidekick and spoil their plans? Find out, comic fans, in the next installment of Cougar and Cub!

Writing:

The comic book world needs more Nick Marino. Enjoyable adult humor is a rarity in comics today. Understandably so since it’s not an easy thing to pull off, especially issue after issue. There has been no shortage of laughs in this series thanks to Nick, who has consistently delivered on every occasion. You’re not going to get some jokes which fall flat or miss the mark. Cougar and Cub is the pinnacle of precision punchlines and perfectly placed puns. Not many can attempt and excel at writing comedy, especially in this medium, but Marino has mastered the craft as he has put the funny back into these ol’ funny books. Definitely my choice as top comedic writer in the industry today. Hands down.

I have to say that the comic book world needs more Rosie Knight as well I am truly enjoying what she brings to Cougar and Cub. The throwback sidestories are a fun addition at the end of each issue and Rosie’s writing is a credit to the series. What always catches my eye is the artistic poetry-like quality in her captions. Her writing style, coupled with Massa’s art, is something I always wish I had more of by time the story concludes. I would love to see a future issue of Cougar and Cub where the writing roles were reversed. Sort of like a “Minerva and Billy’s Day Off,” where the first few pages show them enjoying a day free of crime, and the remaining bulk of the issue to be a full throwback story from Knight. Would love to see how she’d tackle 20 pages of narrating our punchy, protagonist partners, be it in a throwback or not.

Art:

Daniel Arruda Massa continues to bring the outrageous art that has defined Cougar and Cub. It’s wild, it’s zany (I’ve never used that word in a review before), and it’s a fun-filled festival for the eyes thanks to his contribution in the series. Just as Marino has such precision with his comedic timing, Massa accentuates the humor with his creative caricatures, brilliant colors, and sharp layouts. It’s also a spectacle to behold to see him shift gears when partnering with Rosie Knight in the throwback side-stories. Quite frankly, not only am I glad to see Massa and Marino work together on a project again (see: Holy F*ck and Holy F*cked), Daniel is the perfect compliment for this series. His work not only shows his artistic range but elevates the story and helps make both writers shine. A true asset to the team!

PopCultHQ’s overall assessment:

What can I say that hasn’t been said in my prior reviews for this series. Cougar and Cub is the most hilarious superhero romp available anywhere. You’re guaranteed laughs, brilliantly ridiculous illustrations, and storytelling with an episodic and throwback feel. What Marino, Knight, and Massa have produced is ripe for a transition to animation, as it would rival (and likely surpass) any adult-themed/oriented cartoon available today. Make Mine Megaville!

Just as Action Lab Entertainment leads the way when it comes to all-ages comics, their Danger Zone imprint has the titles which know how to deliver wildly funny and outrageous stories, especially notable new series AmeriKarate and certainly Cougar and Cub. Though you will be more than thoroughly pleased reading each issue digitally, and I highly recommend doing so since you can take the hilarity with you anywhere, it’s exciting to know that a collected volume trade is slated for this July (details below). Now I’ll have something the creators can sign when I hunt them down. Who am I kidding? I’d let them autograph my digital version 😉

What Happens When You Sleep With Your Sidekick

Hi, Nick Marino here. I’m one of the creators behind COUGAR AND CUB. My publisher asked me to craft a press release for the upcoming print collection of our subversive superhero satire story, so let’s do this.

Basically, we want you to know that this book is coming out soon. It’s in the May 2017 PREVIEWSworld™ catalog from Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc.®©™ with the order code MAY171004. Again, that order code is MAY171004. 😉

So why should anyone read this book? Well, I’ll tell you this… it’s not like any other comic book out there right now. You’re not gonna see the outrageous art of Daniel Arruda Massa drawing a “Big Two” series nowadays. You’re not gonna see brilliant twists like the ones from Rosie Knight‘s backup stories gracing the pages of your average indie comic. And you certainly won’t get the detailed alliteration of my narrative captions in any comic book released after the year 1969.

Cougar and Cub are sorta like Batman and Robin… but if Batman was a tough-as-nails rich-as-hell black woman who does what she wants when she wants, and if Robin was a whiny white kid who’s always fuming about something and making impetuous decisions. Oh wait, I guess that’s already exactly like Robin. Nevermind.

So what happens to our titular heroes in this tale? It’s pretty simple: they have an ill-advised one night stand in our first chapter and spend the next 100 pages trying to patch up their working relationship. Can they reteam and take down the dastardly villains plaguing the fine city of Megaville? Or will they crumble under the pressure and cave quicker than the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50? (HINT: They’re Cougars… not Panthers!)

This is the part of the press release where we’d normally feature a quote from a member of our creative team extolling the virtues of our comic book. But I’m already writing the damn thing, so let’s just wrap this up quickly with a short-but-sweet line from yours truly, “I worked my ass off to make this comic book and I hope you enjoy it.” WOW. What a quote, right?

Billy Bobtail has abandoned the mantle of Cub for a new XTREME identity while Minerva Manx has abandoned crimefighting completely. Is the time ripe for Megaville’s supervillains to scrub out our heroes for good? Plus, head back to the heavy days of underground comics as our ferocious feline goes solo and ends up claws deep with some seriously psychedelic psychos!

COUGAR AND CUB #3
“Feeling Hard“

After the chaos at Comic Con in the last issue, resulting in Megaville’s superhero duo being torn apart, issue three of COUGAR AND CUB shows how each of the crime-fighting couple is coping being companionless. Billy Bobtail has taken on the new moniker of Meowz and is trying to establish himself as a credible solo act, though his swagger and costume are mocked at Sidekick Academy. Meanwhile, the miserable Minerva Manx mourns her missing mate. Thanks to Esmeralda giving her the wake-up call she needed, our star superhero gets back on track and our Cougar has returned!

This issue also showcases more members of the mysterious mischief-makers, including Miss Chievous, The Roach, and Father Fornicator! These villains intent on taking Minerva down (which normally she’d be game for) take advantage of Cougar’s vulnerability now that she’s without back-up.

The throwback story, a feature in the latter pages in each issue of COUGAR AND CUB, continues to deliver some insight into Minerva’s background and earlier adventures when rollin’ solo was the norm. A fun addition to this title, this uncommon approach to revealing a character’s backstory is done remarkably well issue after issue. Plus, interior artist Daniel Arruda Massa get to show his range by producing a different style of illustrations. Fun stuff!

Writing:

In my opinion, writer Nick Marino is quite possibly the best comedic writer in the business today. From his early work on SUPER HATERS to the more recent HOLY F&CK, Marino has shown he has a grasp of timely humor accompanied with strong writing. But it’s in COUGAR AND CUB where I feel he has surpassed even those earlier funny titles. From his narration to the personalities he’s given the characters in this series, the amusing innuendos and clever alliterations, and the “Nothing is Off-Limits” mentality, you’d be hard-pressed to find another title producing as many laughs as COUGAR AND CUB…and consistently, I might add. Even prior to reading issue three, Nick has become my go-to source when I’m in the mood to just chill and get silly. And it’s a feeling that follows me for hours after reading each issue. There’s something special in that.

I look forward to writer Rosie Knight’s work in every issue. Her stories found in the flashback sequences are wildly imaginative and delivered quite well. This issue’s contribution was actually a bit of a mind f*ck for me; I read it three times on three different occasions, and each time I found myself trying to process what I had just read for a good ten minutes after I stepped away. But I like that. It’s part of the beauty which Knight brings to the series. Though a different style of delivery from Marino, Knight can dish out the laughs just as well but takes you on intellectual thrill ride with her story. And after processing all of what she contributes to this issue, I have a newfound appreciation for the way this writer thinks. Look hard enough you’ll find just how intelligent and strategic Rosie’s writing can be.

Art:

Daniel Arruda Massa continues to create such fun characterizations in this series. With its almost cartoon style, Daniel’s art is a big part of the laughter in COUGAR AND CUB. From the over-the-top villains to his portrayal of the characters’ mannerisms, the artist shows he’s having a blast getting expressive and adding to the hilarity of the title. And I look forward to just how he will depict Rosie’s story each issue. It can be remarkable watching an artist showcase his craft on a number of levels in one issue. Mad respect.

When I read through C&C3 the second time, I couldn’t help but feel that the inks improved in issue three. Though subtle, the shading and outlines were a bit stronger, though I had never previously felt that the inking required more work. Arruda Massa also has implemented colors to near-perfection in COUGAR AND CUB. Whether primarys or pastels, its vibrance truly captures the tone and mood of each issue. That’s some D.A.M. fine work!

PopCultHQ’s overall assessment:

COUGAR AND CUB #3 is another solid offering by Marino, Knight, and Arruda Massa. The pace did feel like it slowed down a touch from the previous issue, but it still possesses everything that made issues one and two enjoyable: sharp comedic wit, colorful and lively art, a healthy dosage of rhyming and alliterations, and an all-around audacious absurdity with adult appeal.

What COUGAR AND CUB delivers every issue is a lighthearted, entertaining, and humorous superhero romp. It doesn’t fit any particular model for a comic book but that’s actually an asset to this awesome series. We’re still awaiting both Diaper Rash and Sugar Mama’s debut in action against Megaville’s protectors, but there’s also the question as to the identity of the obscure individual leading the town’s villains. I expect this will be a great reveal when it happens!

This is one of only a small handful of titles which I anticipate each month and the only series that delivers a lot of guaranteed laughs every time. With the final two issues currently being scheduled for their digital releases, and the plans for Action Lab to produce a graphic novel of the five-issue miniseries later in 2017 (a MUST buy!), it’s exciting to know that there is still more coming from the title and creative team. If you love some good ol’ adult humor, a quirky cast of characters, and are fans of tv cartoon series like Johnny Bravo, Dexter’s Lab, and Ren & Stimpy, then COUGAR AND CUB needs to be in your collection. It’s the perfect digital series to take with you on the go whenever you need a good laugh or to lighten your mood. It delivers all that and more!
