New to Netflix – PJ Masks

Once a week, I will turn on Netflix and select the first show listed under New Releases. This week’s show is a children’s series called PJ Masks.

PJ Masks follows three 6-year-olds, Connor, Amaya, and Greg, who lead relatively normal lives by day, where they are neighbors, classmates, and friends. However, at night, they become Catboy, Owlette, and Gekko, and fight crime as the PJ Masks, a superhero team. Together they go on adventures, defeat criminals, solve mysteries, and learn valuable lessons.

The show is produced by Entertainment One, Frog Box Entertainment, and TeamTO and based on a French book series called Les Pyjamasques by Romuald Racioppo. It is a Disney Junior show that first aired in 2015.

The graphics are smooth and brightly colored which should grab the attention of any pre-schooler. There are two episodes per 25 minute segment, breaking it down nicely for the small attention spans. Each episode has a lesson to teach – patience, conquering fears, etc.

The narrator style and the hero reveal remind me of the Power Puff Girls, and the music has the feel of the campy Batman TV series. Unfortunately, that is where the enjoyment (at least for an adult) ends. The character voices are whiny and annoying.

For a show that is teaching lessons to pre-schoolers, the villains do a lot of name-calling. There also doesn’t seem to be any repercussions for the villains, no parental figures and no sign of any authorities.

As a parent, I put this in the same category as Caillou, not something I would watch with my child. And definitely not something I would let him watch on a regular basis.

As an adult that likes cartoons, I say avoid this show. It seems like they are trying to do the best pieces of the popular cartoons and slap into another, hoping the formula might just work. And I guess for the pre-school age group, it might just be working, at least looking at the merchanidising out there…but it is Disney, so what else do you expect?

New Trailer for ‘Star Wars: Rebels’ Looks Grim but Hopeful

As we saw in a previous trailer for the final season, Grand Admiral Thrawn and the Empire are looking to crack down on the Rebellion. This latest trailer for the show’s final season shows that the threat to Sabine and Mandalore may be even more serious than we originally thought.

Thrawn claims to have a weapon that will bring the planet to its knees and swear loyalty to the Empire while we see Sabine mourning a loss. However, Ezra is not ready to give up the fight. He says this is how a rebellion starts – small, with a few people standing together. Bolstered, Sabine leads the charge carrying the Darksaber. The fight is far from over, and the Rebels characters won’t give up easily.

Season 4 of Star Wars: Rebels premieres October 16 with an hour-long episode on Disney XD.

Live Action Jetsons Sitcom in the Works for ABC

It seems that every cartoon and animation that we grew up with is going live-action. It probably started with the Flintstones (pictured right) back in 1994 and it has been picking up steam ever since.

The newest cartoon to be put into a live-action format is another Hanna-Barbera classic series “The Jetsons.”

ABC has ordered a pilot episode and the team will include writer Gary Janetti, and production team Robert Zemeckis, Jack Rapke, and Jackie Levine. The multi-camera sitcom will be set 100 years in the future and will follow our favorite space family.

The ABC project is not associated with the animated movie currently in development by Warner Bros. and director Conrad Vernon or the 2017 video release The Jetsons & WWE: Robo-WrestleMania!

See the First Ever Animated Cartoon On Its 109th Birthday

August 17th, 1908 was the official release date of what is considered to be the first ever animated cartoon. Fantasmagorie is a French film was created by Émile Cohl. Each frame was individually drawn on paper and then shot onto negative film, giving it a blackboard look. Fantasmagorie consisted of 700 drawings and ran for a total of about two minutes.

The film shows a stick man and a stick clown moving about and encountering various objects and minor adventures. Enjoy the first official Animated film below!

See A Sneak Peek Of The New ‘DuckTales’ From D23

Last weekend’s D23 convention brought us tons of Disney-related goodies, including this sneak peek of a scene from the new DuckTales series that will premiere on Disney XD in a little less than a month. We’ve already seen a video compilation from the series, but now we have a full scene to give us a better idea of the personalities of each character.

Mrs. Beakley seems all no-nonsense as usual, but with the addition of cat-like reflexes to catch that teacup and teapot. Webby takes the war-game incredibly seriously, even building a full backstory for her character while the boys are just in it for the fun. The biggest personality change seems to be with Uncle Scrooge. This version takes the nerf war in stride and appears much more easy-going than the previous cartoon incarnation – except for when you use his bathroom it seems!

See The New Roster Of Heroes For ‘Marvel’s Avengers: Secret Wars’

Last season, the Marvel’s Avengers Assemble cartoon on Disney XD rebranded its title to go along with the main story arc of the season, taking the name Ultron Revolution. For the upcoming season 4, the show will take on the name Avengers: Secret Wars. Along with the new title also comes a host of new characters which we get to see in the official trailer that came out today.

After the Cabal (Arnim Zola, Kang the Conqueror, Executioner, Enchantress, and Leader) scatters the Avengers across time and space, Black Panther forms the New Avengers to both take their place and help find the Avengers. The new season will see the return of Ant-Man, Ms. Marvel, Vision, and Captain Marvel, as well as new characters such as Jane Foster as Thor and the Wasp. Hayley Atwell will make a voice appearance in the show to reprise the character of Agent Peggy Carter.

Marvel’s Avengers: Secret Wars will premiere Saturday, June 17 at 11:30AM Eastern/10:30AM Central on Disney XD.

Pixar’s ‘Coco’ Gives a Lively Twist to the Dead in this New Trailer

“Once every year, our ancestors come back to our world; no living person has ever visited their world….until now.”

That is the opening for the new Disney-Pixar trailer “Coco.” The animated film follows aspiring musician Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez) and a trickster named Hector (Gael García Bernal) as they venture into the Land of the Dead in order to find the true story behind Miguel’s family history. Along the way they have humorous encounters with his deceased relatives.

“Coco follows a 12-year-old boy named Miguel who sets off a chain of events relating to a century-old mystery, leading to an extraordinary family reunion.”

Coco is set to come to theaters on Nov. 22, 2017.

The video shows Huey, Dewey, and Louie coming to stay with their uncle, Scrooge McDuck, for the weekend. They meet characters including Lauchpad McQuack and Webby Vanderquack, and manage to get into all sorts of dangerous adventures.

From this short promo, it seems like the creators have managed to capture the innocent fun of the original cartoon. This fan is definitely looking forward to seeing where it goes.

DuckTales is scheduled to be released on Disney XD sometime this summer
