[Movie News] In Theaters This Week – November 13, 2020

Many theaters are still not open in the US. Some have had to close again due to health restrictions being put back in place or simply due to a lack of people coming in. While many big-name movies are pushing their release dates back even further, or choosing to premiere overseas first, a number of movies are still determined to make their way to theaters.

This week has quite a few new releases. There are two period-set movies, a film about two cyclist friends, an animated film, a movie about a teenage girl who swaps bodies with a serial killer, and much more. There’s certainly something that will appeal to just about everyone!

Ammonite (R)

1840s England, acclaimed but overlooked fossil hunter Mary Anning and a young woman sent to convalesce by the sea develop an intense relationship, altering both of their lives forever

[Reptile’s Random Review] ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’

I took the family out for a movie night to see the new movie Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. I thought, “here is another movie where Disney is just trying to cash in on the first movie’s success.” I figured it was going to go the way of most sequels and we would regret the price for admission. But, at our local NCG Cinema, at least the popcorn (though pricey) is always good.

My son picked a good spot and we settled in to watch the opening scene in the woods. On a side note, throughout the whole movie they keep referring to the area as the “Moors.” “Moors” by definition are a grassy savanna-type area with low-growing vegetation, and they kept showing wooded areas with a good amount of water. But I digress on this small annoyance for me.

Without giving too much away, Aurora has grown into a young woman and is in love with Prince Phillip, who returns her love. He asks her to marry him and she says yes. Now, Maleficent being who she is, wants none of this as she hates all humans, with the exception of her adopted daughter Aurora. Enter the King and Queen of Ulstead who invite Aurora and Maleficent to dinner to celebrate the upcoming nuptials. This is where we get to see who the true villain is (insert dramatic music here). From here we end up with the Moors Fae and the kingdom of Ulstead in conflict and ready for war.

On the whole, I was riveted by the special effects and creativity that went into the movie. I loved the colorful imaginative Fae Folk that Walt Disney Pictures and Roth Films included. Every time you think you’ve seen them all, they seem to squeeze another one in. I was surprised by the storyline which actually existed and made sense. Remember, I was thinking this was just going to be another Disney money grab capitalizing on the fame and name of the first movie and its celebrities. I found myself very interested in the folklore of the Fae and how they were created, even though some of it was a bit of a reach. I also found a few parts of the movie a little too predictable, but I didn’t find myself thinking, “is it over yet?”

I would also like to add that I enjoyed Angelina Jolie‘s portrayal of Maleficent. Her facial expressions throughout the movie were priceless, such as when she attempted a friendly smile and it would seem more look like she was ready to tear into you. It was chilling and comical at the same time. Michelle Pfeiffer as Queen Ingrith was a great fit as well. Once again, Michelle is 100% on her game in this role. But I’m not going to give too much away here either. For me, these two actresses are what really make the movie enjoyable.

On a scale of 5 stars, I give Maleficent: Mistress of Evil 4 Stars.

[Movie News] In Theaters This Week – October 18, 2019

The new movies in theaters this weekend cover quite the spectrum of films. First off, there is the sequel to Disney’s Maleficent film, showing that even the fairytales we love can have another perspective to them. Another sequel out this weekend is to 2009’s Zombieland, giving fans another dose of zombie hunting. Also new are a number of foreign films, a thriller about two lighthouse keepers in 1980’s New England, a Jay and Silent Bob reboot, and much more!

The three men, friends of childhood, will cross, compare their personal experiences and question their life of couple, family and professional.

The Captain

The film is based on a real-life incident in May 2018, when the cockpit windshield of a Sichuan Airlines flight shattered while the plane was flying 30,000 feet above the Tibetan Plateau. The co-pilot was sucked halfway out of the cockpit and passengers started losing consciousness due to low pressure, but the captain managed to land the plane safely.

Serendipity

Serendipity began as a book, published on the occasion of Prune Nourry’s solo show at the Guimet National Asian Art Museum in Paris in 2017. The French-born, New York-based artist has spent the majority of her artistic career creating work that deals with women’s bodies and female fertility. A recent breast cancer diagnosis led Nourry to create Serendipity-now in the form of a stunning first-person documentary-which captures the subsequent evolution of her body, her work, her soul, and her mind. This impassioned, beautiful film embodies the artist’s belief that everything is connected, coincidence is an illusion, and “the essentials to life really are health, love, and art.”

Wonder Woman movie picks up new director! Same one who left Thor 2 over “creative differences!”

Just as Alanis Morissette sings, “Isn’t it ironic!” It didn’t take long for WB Studios to find a replacement for director Michelle MacLaren who had left in mid-development of the “Wonder Woman” film over creative differences. Michelle MacLaren leaves Wonder Woman movie article

Today a new director has joined the Wonder Woman project: Patty Jenkins, (reported by The Hollywood Reporter.) who is most famously known for leaving Thor 2 over her very own creative differences. Not that creative differences don’t happen much in hollywood, it just seems to have a whole new level of attention due to the fact both women directors are unintentionally vying to be the first women directors to helm a female superhero movie.

Patty Jenkins has a very solid resume as well and is also capable of directing a movie with credits that include writing and directing 2003’s “Monster” (which earned Charlize Theron an Academy Award). THR states the “Wonder Woman” move is official, saying Jenkins has “closed a deal” for the film.

I don’t really mind Parry Jenkins as a director, she will just have to prove that she is worth all the production hassle. I do know it is better then the rumors I hear that “there’s the possibility” Angelina Jolie could direct Wonder Woman! I know as a huge comic book fan I would not want to see that happen!

There are also lots of reporting saying that Angelina Jolie is “definitely under consideration for” Marvel’s first female-led superhero movie, Captain Marvel. This was first reported by OK Magazine during February.

I don’t know how to take this bit of news of musical chairs of female directors. I know a lot of people are saying it is difficult to make a female superhero movie since the audience is not there to support one. I strongly disagree with that notion of thinking. The female teen market is one of the strongest in our US economy and the heads of marketing and movie executives are failing to capitalize on that. Speaking with a large number of female comic book fans of all ages I hear one thing over and over again. “Where is our female merchandise and movies?” With the huge success that Black Widow and Gamorra have had on Marvel movies, their faces are always missing from standalone merchandise. The female fans want their superhero movies as well and Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel will prove that.

Starring Gal Gadot in the title role, “Wonder Woman” — the first feature film to star the iconic DC Comics superhero — is currently slated for release on June 23, 2017. Gadot will first be seen as Wonder Woman in next year’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” out March 25, 2016.
