Star Trek: Discovery – Boldy Going Where Star Trek Has Gone Before

After more than 50 years, five TV series, 13 movies, an animated series, and countless publications, the Star Trek franchise is still going strong. It isn’t really going anywhere that it hasn’t gone before, but it has a formula that works and fans are eagerly awaiting information on the newest in the Star Trek universe.

Star Trek: Discovery will be the fifth TV series based around the original 1966 show. Star Trek: Discovery is set 10 years before the original series, and unlike other Star Trek shows, the star will not be the Captain. The focus will be on the second in command, Lieutenant Commander Rainsford, plays by Sonequa Marin-Green (The Walking Dead) as they explore “an event previously mentioned in the history of the original Star Trek timeline.”

Focusing on the second in command actually makes more sense than the original series where we always saw the entire command crew on away missions. Even the newer shows frequently had the main command crew in a remote location, not the smartest move.

The newest confirmation by CBS is that the role of Captain Lorca, the commander, will be played by Jason Isaacs (The OA, Star Trek: Rebels).

Other previously announced cast members include Doug Jones (Falling Skies) as Lt. Saru, Maulik Pancholy (Phineas and Ferb) as Dr. Nambue, Anthony Rapp as Lt. Stamets, Terry Serpico as Admiral Anderson and Michelle Yeoh (Marco Polo, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon:Sword of Destiny) as Captain Georgiou.

Star Trek: Discovery is slated for a 2017 debut.
