Skarsgard Lands Role as Pennywise the Clown of Stephen King’s “It”

Skarsgard is currently in final negotiations to star in the horror film and reprise the role first played by veteran actor Tim Curry. Pennywise is the embodiment of evil personified in this psychotic-looking clown. The story follows a group of teens called the Losers Club who defeat a creature called It. Years later, the creature returns, and the former club members, now adults, have to band together again even though they have no memory of the first battle.

Bringing ‘It‘ to the big screen has been in the making for quite some time. Cary Fukunaga (Jane Eyre, True Detective) was originally signed on to direct and actor Will Poulter (We’re the Millers, The Revenant) had been chosen for the role of Pennywise. Fukunaga left due to creative differences which led to the movie being pushed back a year. When the selection of a new director finally came about, Poulter was no longer available due to another commitment.

Bill Skarsgard has appeared in Anna Karenina, Lionsgate’s Divergent and will return for Ascendant.

The cast inculdes Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs and Jeremy Ray Taylor. The adaptation will be directed by Andy Muschietti (Mama) and will be told in two parts. New Line’s first film will tell the kids’ story, while the second movie will focus on the adults.

Storyline for 2017’s It, according to IMDB.com:

In the Town of Derry, the local kids are disappearing one by one, leaving behind torn body parts/remains. Soon afterwards, in a place known as ‘The Barrens’, a group of seven kids are united by their horrifying and strange encounters with a clown called Pennywise, which they all share, but one kid, Bill Denborough, has a more personal vendetta with the clown. 27 years after their last encounter together with Pennywise, the ‘Losers Club’ has regrouped from their successful lives and businesses by Mike Hanlon, the only member of the Losers Club that stayed in Derry, because IT has returned, and kids are disappearing again. The only problem is that they have all forgotten what occurred that summer. But through a blood oath, they return. It’s up to The Lucky Seven to regain their memories, to think of the key to killing Pennywise, and to stay alive long enough to end his tyranny but to also realise what brought them together in the first place.
