Pairing Science with Fiction

Silicon Valley Comic Con (SVCC), Steve Wozniak’s pop culture and technology expo, is almost here! Taking place April 21-23, 2017 in downtown San Jose, Silicon Valley Comic Con aims to inspire and entertain with celebrity appearances, science/tech discussions, film and TV screenings, panels with award-winning authors and artists, cosplay contests and more.

In addition to celebrating the pop culture and technology of today, SVCC 2017 will feature a series of themed exhibits and sessions focused on the “Future of Humankind: Where will we be in 2075?” SVCC 2017 attendees will be able to hear visions of the future from high profile guests and companies spanning a variety of industries. Here’s a look at the special events happening at SVCC 2017:

Lower Level of the Convention Center

Need to repair your costume during the con? Want to watch a workshop on how to build props with foam? Or maybe you just want to see — and take photos with — some cool cosplayers? Whatever your goal, Adam Savage’s Cosplay Workshop and Lounge is the place to make it happen. Not only will the workshop and lounge serve as the post-competition cosplay destination for photos and video interviews conducted by Tested.com, but Adam himself will be making appearances throughout the weekend to check out the costumes and help with any repairs.

Saturday @ 6:30PM at the City National Civic

Silicon Valley Comic Con will proudly host its second annual Cosplay Contest! The contest is a craftsmanship award show with a pre-judging session and a catwalk exhibition. Pre- judging will be held in the City National Civic across the street from the Convention Center, beginning on Saturday from 3:30-5:00. The main event will be held in front of a panel of celebrity judges on the main stage in the City National Civic beginning at 6:30pm on Saturday!

Get in touch with your inner geek at The Geek Fashion Show, where geek meets chic, anime meets steampunk, and gaming meets superheroes to name just a few of the amazing combinations that will surprise and delight you!

The Geek Fashion Show will feature beautiful models from the comic and sci-fi community of fans, cosplayers and celebrities showing off the collections of the most talented young designers from around the country.

With The Geek Fashion Show, you can now be as beautiful on the outside as you are on the inside! We’ll see you there!

Lower Level – The Hub during Show Hours!

Kids of all ages will have a “blast” at the Kids’ STEAM Lab. Check out NASA’s Aeronautics and Robotics demos and interact with vintage tech! The Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose will let you create your own kingdom and Imagination Playground. Release your inner Godzilla by building and destroying Cardboard City, or explore the modern tech world with the San Jose Public Library (SJPL)! Ripped your Jedi robe? SJPL has your back with their Emergency Cosplay Repair! Create one-of-kind comic book buttons, and take photos with your friends and favorite characters in SJPL’s photo booth!

Don’t miss your chance to sit inside this faithful, street legal replica driven by Christopher Lloyd ‘Doc Brown’ himself!

Built by husband and wife team Oliver and Terry Holler, this DeLorean features the famous ‘Flux Capacitor’, working time circuits and even comes equipped with a hoverboard! It has toured twenty-eight countries as an ambassador for the official web site BacktotheFuture.com, appeared in international ad campaigns and is used to raise funds and awareness for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

 

Sunday @ 2:30PM at SVCC Outdoor Festival

Do your dogs love to dress up as much as you, or do you know someone who dresses up their dog more than they do themselves? If the answer is yes, then this event is for you! DogVacay, the leading online service connecting pet owners with pet si ers, will host a Dog Cosplay Contest at the SVCC Outdoor Festival! In addition to public entries for the dog cosplay contest, DogVacay has partnered with Rocket Dog Rescue to showcase some cute local rescue dogs to help them get adopted. Lower Level of the Convention Center; Auction Kicks Off Sunday @ Noon

Silicon Valley Comic Con is proud to announce a partnership with ScreenUsed, one of the world’s leading movie and television memorabilia companies. The live auction will be held in the ScreenUsed Auction Exhibit Hall located on the lower level of the convention center, on Sunday, April 23rd, beginning at 12:00pm. This is a very rare opportunity to own a piece of your favorite movie, and become the caretaker of a piece of history. Many original movie and television props and wardrobes from many iconic productions will be available in the auction.

Saturday Night at the Hilton Grand Ballroom

In conjunction with SVCC, the SETI Institute will be holding a gala event at the Hilton hotel a ached to the convention center. Tickets are available at seti.org or on the SVCC website. Cocktails begin at 6:30pm, followed by space talks from a variety of the world’s brightest minds. Dinner, a live auction and dancing round out the night. For more information visit www.seti.org.

Show Floor

Come explore the outer reaches of space in the Space Village! Located on the main show floor in the Convention Center directly in front of the main entrance, SVCC’s Space Village will showcase exhibits from NASA, the SETI Institute, Virgin Galactic and SEDS. Displays will range from rocket ships and aeronautics to astrobiology and moon rocks.

Saturday & Sunday: 11am – 2pm within SVCC’s Outdoor Festival

What other show but Woz’s Silicon Valley Comic Con would also feature a SCIENCE FAIR? In cooperation with the Santa Clara County Office of Education’s S.T.E.A.M. Team, SVCC seeks to inspire the imaginations of all attendees, including encouraging S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) students. Bay Area kids are doing great work, and we’re happy to shine a light on their ingenuity.

In honor of Earth Day, Saturday’s Science Fair will be themed SAVE THE PLANET and highlight earth science projects. Superheroes encouraged to visit and support!

Sunday’s Science Fair will be themed FUTURE TECH and highlight robotics and space projects. All participants are invited to come in costume!

Lower Level of the Convention Center

No Comic Con would be complete without a gaming center! Located on the lower level of the Convention Center, The Game Zone, presented by the South Bay Bu on Mashers (SBBM) is a San Jose community organization that provides fun, healthy social experiences with the power of video games. SBBM has teamed up with other local entities — including Rockage: San Jose, SJSU Game Dev Club, Goddesses Media, California Extreme, League of Extraordinary Rock Banders, AFKgg Gamer Lounge, and LVL UP Arcade & Gastropub — to present the Bu on Mash Experience to SVCC. A endees can relive their favorite classic & retro video games and pinball, from Ba letoads, to Street Fighter II, to Mario Kart 64.
