#SDCC2017: Could There Be A New ‘Ghostbusters’ Movie In 2019?

In two years, it will be the 35th anniversary of Ghostbusters’ original 1984 debut, when the comedy was a surprise hit. Having a new movie come out for that anniversary would be very good timing, don’t you think? Ivan Reitman (director of the first two films and producer of the 2016 reboot) would seem to agree.

At a San Diego Comic Con panel on all things Ghostbusters, Reitman stated that the studio is trying to do something special for the upcoming anniversary and release a new movie into the franchise.

“Well, the studio is working on some really nice things. First of all, I can’t believe the movie is still playing and being watched so assiduously… and I can’t believe I’m so old. Yeah, I think there’s going to be a lot of fun, a lot of special things. We’re going to try to tie one of our films close to that date.”

The form that this movie would take is still unknown. Will it be an animated or live-action film? Will it feature the all-female cast of Lesley Jones, Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy, and Kristen Wiig, or start over with an entirely new cast? There’s has also been speculation that the studio could attempt to join up the original Ghostbusters team with their 2016 counterparts.

Whatever route the creators decide to take, we won’t have to wait too long for news. In order to have it released in the summer of 2019, announcements of writers, director, and cast will soon be forthcoming.

What would you like to see happen in a new Ghostbusters movie? Should they bring back past teams, or start fresh again? Let us know in the comments!
