Black Canary Suits Up For Season 6 of ‘Arrow’

‘Arrow’ EP Wendy Mericle

Season 5 of Arrow saw the introduction of Dinah Drake as the new Black Canary (Juliana Harkavy), following in the steps of both Sara and Laurel Lance. Upon first joining the team, she didn’t wear much in the way of superhero attire other than a mask to hide her identity, but that will be changing in the upcoming sixth season of the superhero show. A recent interview with Arrow executive producer Wendy Mericle over at EW gives us our first look at Dinah’s new threads, and I think it’s safe to say that she will fit in quite well with the rest of Team Arrow.

The outfit takes quite a departure from the two previous Black Canary suits, which were entirely black, and it incorporates touches of yellow and gold. Mericle stated that this was her favorite part about the costume. While we won’t immediately know what spurs on Dinah to suit up, Mericle does mention that 5 months will have passed since the cliffhanger of Season 5 and the beginning of Season 6.

In seeing this new outfit, it has been confirmed that at least one member of Team Arrow survived the explosion of Lian Yu, but if anyone else survived remains yet to be seen. “No matter what, our hope is that finale was powerful and also very destructive. It literally did blow up Oliver’s past, but I think in many ways it’s a reset for all of the characters. It was traumatic. It’s a big traumatic event that will definitely have huge reverberations throughout the whole season really for Oliver, but for everybody. The show is still centered around the Green Arrow and Oliver Queen, but these other characters are coming into their own and there will be more stories this year. We have no flashbacks that we have to service, so there will be more real estate to explore the characters in addition to Oliver.”

Last season, Dinah’s motivation for being a hero primarily had to do with revenge, but in moving to Star City and finding family in Team Arrow, her motivations seem to have changed. “She’s fighting for her family now, and that family extends beyond the team. It’s going to grow into something that basically represents the city for her. This is her new home. As someone who basically wandered the earth for revenge, these are higher stakes for her now. Star City and the team mean a lot to her.”

Arrow returns with new episodes on the CW Thursday, October 12 at 9PM Eastern/8PM Central.
