This Wednesday, December 19th is the epic debut of Archie Comics‘ BETTY & VERONICA!

BETTY & VERONICA #1 QUOTES

“This series is more of a return to form for the ladies, turning in their motorcycles from the VIXENS series for college applications,” said series writer Jamie L. Rotante. “What will be the same, though, is the focus on female friendship and independence. Relationships in this series will hit some rough patches and the pairings that form might NOT be a few you’d expect.”

“BETTY AND VERONICA #1 has all the elements of a great Archie comic – drama, friendship, humor and heart,” adds Archie Comics Co-President and series editor Alex Segura. “It’s a testament to the talented team behind it. Jamie’s story is poignant without feeling overwrought and hits the right emotional notes subtly and smartly. Sandra, Kelly and Jack bring her words to life to create a story that breathes new life into these iconic characters, making for a fresh, relatable and hard-to-ignore debut. Don’t miss this issue.”

Senior Year is usually where teenagers start to figure out who they are and finalize their plans for after high school – why was it important to set this story in senior year?

Jamie L. Rotante: “It was important to set the story in senior year because it’s such a crazy and interesting time in everyone’s life. You’re balancing figuring out who you are and who you want to be–something that many people won’t find for a long time–but you feel as though it needs to be done before you head into college. You’re being asked what you want to do with the rest of your life while you’re still trying to get your homework done and have regular teenage fun. We pile a lot onto teenager’s backs and don’t give them enough credit for all the work that they do and the amazing strides they make, and I really wanted this series to highlight the challenges and rewards that come at this time of every person’s life.”

Each issue will take place at a different point of the year. What made you choose that format for the story?

Jamie L. Rotante: “I thought it would be a good idea to have this story unfold over the course of a full school year. Since each quarter/season brings with it something new and exciting–and often times also crazy and frustrating–for many teens, I felt it was best to theme each issue out that way. From holidays to prom to graduation, all ground will be covered.”

Tell us about what it’s been like working with artist Sandra Lanz and colorist Kelly Fitzpatrick on the comic. What makes them a good fit to join you in telling this story?

Jamie L. Rotante: “I’m so lucky to, again, get to work with some fantastic artists on this project. Sandra Lanz has an amazing YA-sensibility to her art that lends itself so perfectly to what this series is trying to convey. I love the way she differentiates the characters and her sense of style is impeccable. As for colors, I’ve been a huge fan of Kelly’s work for years and I’m so excited to have her on this project. He colors consistently blow me away. Add to that the legendary Jack Morelli on letters–who is just an awesome person and one of the best letterers out there. I couldn’t be more honored to work with this team.”

Can you tease any new relationships or pairings in this series?

Jamie L. Rotante: “I will say–relationships in this series will hit some rough patches and the pairings that form might NOT be a few you’d expect. And while they’re won’t be a ton of fighting over a certain you-know-who, there will be some unresolved drama involving him that gets revisited.”

Where can fans read or purchase BETTY & VERONICA #1 and how can they support the title?

Jamie L. Rotante: “There are many ways to buy and read BETTY & VERONICA #1! You can read it on your phone or tablet thanks to digital apps like the Archie App and Comixology. You can also subscribe to the full series online at ArchieComics.com. But you can support the series even more by picking up a copy at your local comic shop. The best way to make sure you always have issues when they come out is by pre-ordering your copies at a comic shop in advance. It ensures your issue will be in stock and it’s best for the overall success and longevity of a series. Betty & Veronica may only be a five-issue mini for now, but if enough people are reading it there’s no stopping it from picking up and continuing on. I mean who wouldn’t want to see BETTY & VERONICA: THE COLLEGE YEARS?”
