Power Rangers or Breakfast Club? I’m Confused

“Teen angst and a coming of age story for “disenfranchised and disparate” high schoolers, who are not friends when the new story begins.”

That is what director Dean Israelite told EW about his new superhero project, then when I look at the photo the first thing I think of is ‘Breakfast Club.’ I was actually a little torn about whether or not I wanted to see such a classic remade, then when I continued reading I breathed a sigh of relief.

Apparently that is the promo shot and description for a new Power Rangers Movie that is due to hit theaters in 2017.

Unlike most Power Rangers it doesn’t seem that the civilian clothing is color coded to the Rangers, at least not yet.

The new cast consists of Becky G will be Trini the Yellow Ranger, RJ Cyler will be Billy the Blue Ranger, Dacre Montgomery will play Jason the Red Ranger, Ludi Lin will portray Zack the Black Ranger, and Naomi Scott will be Kimberly the Pink Ranger.

According to the EW article the whole series is getting a revamp (again?) but keeping elements that are familiar to us from previous series. You still have a racially and sexually diverse cast of five teenagers who will be dressing up in fancy suits and blasting aliens.

The new suits were designed by Weta Workshop who is best known for their work with ‘Lord of the Rings.’ Israelite describes the suits as having a “really modern, edgy, badass, aspirational quality” while being instantly recognizable as Power Rangers.

“We’ve really pushed ourselves to make them feel different from any other superhero costume that’s out there,” Israelite said. “One key that’s different to the Power Ranger suits is that they’re not really suits that people get into. They’re suits that morph onto our kids, so they already have this almost metaphysical quality to them.”

Elizabeth Banks has been cast as the main baddie, Rita Repulsa who Israelite says, “ I think what she loves is the opportunity to really embrace the insanity and deliciousness of Rita Repulsa in terms of how weird and wonderful that character was, and really dive into and consume that character.”

Filming is currently underway.

Maybe this is the Breakfast Club with monsters instead of principals and janitors?
