PopCultHQ’s LCS Spotlight: DREAMWELL COMICS – Carson City, NV

As PopCultHQ looks to expand our coverage with all things associated with the comic book industry, it only seemed appropriate to look at Local Comic Shops (LCS). Not only do we #SupportIndieComics, but we most definitely #SupportLCS. The brick-and-mortar establishments are an integral component of the comic book industry. Run by hard-working individuals, it’s these shops and retailers who offer what online stores don’t – a personal experience, true customer service, and often some gems which online retailers may not carry or keep in-stock.

Today, PopCultHQ’s Spotlight is Dreamwell Comics in Carson City, NV. What originally began as a new comic shop in Las Vegas, Nevada which had been in business for 21 years before relocating, owners Tim and Don Karter have run and operated their store for nearly eight years in the state capital. The brothers have seen fads come and go (Beanie Babies, Pogs, etc.), stores come in and eventually fold, and an industry that has gone through quite a lot in the last three decades. Above it all, the Karter brothers have endured and persevered simply for their love of comics.

Harley Quinn sketch by artist Chad Hardin made specifically for the Karter brothers

When I visited Dreamwell Comics and spoke with the Karters, it was amazing hearing them retell the history of their store. They’ve seen the ups and downs the comic business dealt with through the late 80s into the 21st century. They shared with me one very notable artist who credits the Karters as the reason he’s doing what he does today…Chad Hardin. Most recognized for his work on DC’s Harley Quinn, when Don and Tim had their store in Las Vegas, a young Chad came into Dreamwell’s and got his first comic. To this day, Chad even recognizes the comic shop veterans, as he did when sending the two store owners a sketch variant made up for them of, you guessed it, Harley Quinn.

Dreamwell participates in Free Comic Book Day every year (first Saturday in May), as well as Halloween ComicFest. You’ll want to be here for those events! You can also sign up for a pull list with some great discounts for all those hot releases coming up this year. With new releases from the Big Two and a lot of indies (Action Lab, AfterShock, Archie, Dark Horse, IDW, Image, Valiant, Zenescope + more!), plenty of back issues to search through, boxes of quarter comics, a large rack with comic books for kids (!), and supplies, memorabilia, clothing, action figures, cards, and more, how could you not want to spend a good 30-60 minutes in here taking it all in. Plus the walls are lined with some beautiful Golden/Silver Age classics and there’s a display case filled with sets and older issues.

We hope you enjoy the pictures from Don and Tim Karter’s local comic shop Dreamwell Comics in Carson City, Nevada. All of their contact info, store hours, and directions can be found below.
