Hitting stands Wednesday, January 13th, is the latest from Valiant‘s Doctor Mirage series. The Death-Defying Doctor Mirage: Second Lives #2 is the second issue of a four-part series. It focuses on the titular character Shan-Fong Mirage (a paranormal investigator) and her apparition husband Hwen. Shan has the ability to see and commune with ghosts, of which her late husband is one. The two are on the search for the mysterious, ancient Vita Secunda scroll, an artifact with mystical powers over the spirit world. Shan feels the scroll may unlock the secrets in giving ghosts human form again. They soon realize that the scroll has released the specter of Denis De Walt, an ethereal being with the ability to kill people and eliminate ghosts. This entity capable of traversing the physical and spiritual realm worries the couple. By performing a ceremonial rite, they wish to not only help the deceased but hope to halt De Walt’s destructive, deadly path. Reluctantly, Dr Mirage has no choice but to align herself with Linton March, a corrupt occultist (who is tormented by ghosts of his own) whom with she has had a past.
Writer Jen Van Meter immerses the reader into this phantasmal epic and executes an arcane storyline which is both compelling and gripping. Artist Roberto De La Torre does a magnificent job of creating a magical personification of spectral bodies and spiritual possession. Both creators combine for a creative and inventive world filled with enchanting characters.
