THE CORTEN-STEEL PHOENIX,” Part One Journey into the thrilling world of international espionage as one of Britain’s most covert MI-6 divisions, The Nest, recruits a brand-new secret agent to their team: SPY SEAL!

An exciting new comic series—reminiscent of The Adventures of Tintin and Usagi Yojimbo—and created by SHE WOLF author, RICH TOMMASO.

PopCultHQ’s Comic Book Review:
SPY SEAL #1
“The Corten-Steel Phoenix”

Writing:

Rich Tommaso’s done a fine job on this first issue. His other works for Image, She Wolf and Dark Corridor, are much more on the dark side, whereas this is much more light in nature. And there is nothing wrong with that at all. A light-hearted but thrilling spy comic is always fun and the start of Spy Seal’s adventures are sure to be real cracker jack stuff.

Art:

Tommaso also does all the art for this first issue (and indeed it seems will be doing so for the entirety of it). His art and colors are pleasing to the eye, they don’t take away from his story or alter the pacing in any way. There is synchronicity within these pages, a fine synchronicity that is laced with banter, humor and action thanks to the script, art and colors.

PopCultHQ’s overall assessment:

From the get go, readers will see that Rich Tommaso is emulating the style of Hergé and his famous TinTin adventures. In short, it is a riveting adventure that will be a fun series for fans of Tommaso’s works, and fans of spy comics and TinTin too. There is one issue within these pages, that of the character of Angora. Her design and style of speak will lead people to assume she is like the stereotyped Asian characters from 1960’s movies and television when she is in fact quite the opposite. Other than that, everything else about this comic is first-rate. An excellent beginning to what is sure to be a thrilling series.

PopCultHQ’s Rating:

4.5 Out of 5 Stars
