The Story So Far… Years ago, Robyn Locksley was brought to Myst, a realm of swords and sorcery, to save the city of Nottingham from a great evil. After fulfilling her destiny, Robyn journeyed back to her home: New York City. There, she began to work as a supernatural private investigator with Marian Quin, a witch from Myst. Together, they have faced war, tragedy, monsters, and even the apocalypse. Now, as Marian prepares to marry the love of her life, Robyn must face the prospect of being alone once again.
This is the end of Robyn Hood and Marian Quin’s story… for now.
Robyn Hood is one of Zenescope’s most reviewed and talked-about titles so it was somewhat sad hearing the news that this highly anticipated epilogue issue closes out long-time writer Pat Shand’s run on the title. Fortunately, Pat and his creative team delivered a strong finale for the beloved heroine.
The story works well as a standalone for those unfamiliar with the series and/or character. There are really two narratives in this annual: the marriage of Marian Quin and the internal conflict with which Robyn is processing. The two intertwine nicely and give the entire issue some semblance of cohesiveness. This is a fantastic telling of Robyn Hood’s past, present, and glimpse into her future. Brilliant story to wrap up the series.
Writer Pat Shand delivers a solid story, as he always does on all the titles he has worked on (Hellchild, Grimm Fairy Tales, Van Helsing, Legends of Oz: Scarecrow, Wonderland and many more). If you are new to Shand’s writing, check out the links below to view more and follow him online.
It was cool having the return of original Robyn Hood artist Larry Watts return for this send-off. Watts shows how he owns these characters as he applies that original style that most Robyn Hood fans will recognize. The talented artist does an exceptional job at capturing the emotions Shand is trying to evoke from the cast. Colorist Slamet Mujiono does a superb job at incorporating just the right contrast, sharpness and hues on every panel. Letterer Jim Campbell is on point as always. There’s a reason why he has worked on so many titles.
Great job to the entire creative team on Robyn Hood: 2016 Annual. Though it may wrap up the series, you know Robyn won’t be disappearing from the Zenescope Universe anytime soon. She actually has a 12-issue series coming in June (more info below).
