Overtaken #2 arrives in stores this coming Wednesday, March 30th from Aspen Comics. PopCultHQ obtained an advance copy to review and tell you about this new series from writer Frank Mastromauro and artist Marco Lorenzana. Here’s our look at Overtaken #2…
A man desperate in his attempt and finding the whereabouts of his vanished wife. Despite police records of the disappearance, Will Hardin is determined to locate Jesse at any cost, even to the point of doing some investigating of his own.
Meanwhile, Jesse is seen on an off-world post gathering data in extreme conditions. Her exploratory spelunking leads her deep within a cavernous realm of lava and seismic activity. But there seems to be some mystery surrounding the program of which she is a part. We find out that people behind the scenes are training and testing her.
The story is primarily composed of internal dialogue, which did actually help laying the groundwork on the characters and conditions they encounter. Granted, I didn’t get the opportunity to read issue one, but from the summation found on the inside cover I kind of got the gist of it. I guess what puzzled me was Jesse’s lack of desire to reunite with her husband and the lack of explaining where she is and what she is doing. Perhaps that was touched on in issue one, but I would have assumed at least a snippet of context would have been included.
I am curious to read issue one, and I would be willing to give issue three a chance, but that may be the make or break issue as to whether I would continue this series. It does show promise, but the rate at which the story progresses could be vital to the success of the title.
