PopCultHQ’s Comic Book Review:
THE OLD GUARD Book One: Opening Fire TP
Writing:
Greg Rucka brings this exciting series, about soldiers from past cultures working together as mercenaries, into the light. There’s a lot of great story within the plot, mixed together with flashbacks into the lives of each member of the group and how they all work together (somehow) selling their abilities as mercenaries and warriors. Fans of Rucka’s superhero projects will enjoy this first volume in the series and almost certainly will want to go out and buy the rest of the books when they are released.
Art:
Leandro Fernandez’s art works well with Rucka’s plot for the first book. There’s lots of heavy action and also scene work that takes readers across the world. From Dubai to Malta and everywhere else within the flashbacks of each team member’s former world. Fernandez’s layouts for the book are tight-knit and fantastic, making readers want to keep reading more and more.
Daniela Miwa’s colors were spot-on for the entire first book. Lots of bright colors that help the series stand on its feet and charge forward (like its namesake Old Guard). The use of shadows as well in particular pages adds heavy texture to the moment, especially points of serious plot and character development.
Jodi Wynne’s lettering does this series prime justice. Lots of great dialogue from the entire cast of characters. Plus the internal thoughts that help build character development, especially with the flashback pages. Here’s hoping she continues to be a part of The Old Guard team, because together they all have produced something fantastic here.
PopCultHQ’s overall assessment:
Rucka, Fernandez, Miwa and Wynne: four names people are already familiar with and will delight in seeing with this first book in ‘The Old Guard’ series. There is nothing but compelling and amazing story, art, colors and letters within the pages, which will bring in new readers and help lock in fans of the first series and bring them back for round two. Hats off to all of the team members for their contributions to ‘The Old Guard, Book One: Opening Fire’.
