John Carpenter’s Tales of Science Fiction: Vault #3
Writing:
James Ninness’ script for this final issue wraps everything up nicely. But like any good story that takes its cue from a master like John Carpenter, it does not go quietly. There is action and lots of great character dialogue on every page. And alongside that action and dialogue, are formed even more questions that are straight out of John’s story style.
Art:
Andres Esparza’s art for issue #3 is big and loud. It’s very in the face of the readers, not unlike the way the final scenes are for a John Carpenter-style movie. Andres’ artwork itself is vivid, violent and beautifully laid out. It is magnificently and lovingly produced onto every page with such care to the smallest details, nothing is overlooked.
Sergio Martinez picked out the very best colors to use in the final installment. Every inch of Andres’ art has nothing but the best colors put forward. From the skin tones of the characters (both human and alien), to the gory splashy panels and fight sequences. Like a big budget Hollywood movie soundtrack, the colors help make this comic come alive.
Janice Chiang’s lettering is great stuff. Elegantly lettered for this, the final issue, in every single word and sentence. From the conversations between the surviving crew-members, to the harsh noises of the alien monsters or the energy discharges from the weapons. Janice has a lettering style that makes everything sound like it’s on the big screen of a movie theater, and not on a comic book page.
PopCultHQ’s overall assessment:
It is very sad to see this as the final issue of John Carpenter’s Science Fiction Tales: Vault. The whole series was like one of John’s movies, a fantastic plot (provided by James), beautiful scenery/art (provided by Andres), outstanding colors (provided by Sergio) and top quality lettering (provided by Janice). Together, this team gave readers and John Carpenter fans one heck of a series. Worthy of being turned into a movie, whatever comes next for the John Carpenter title and this team, it will be nothing less than great.
