PopCultHQ’s Comic Book Review: Grimm Fairy Tales #122

There’s a reason the Grimm Fairy Tales titles have endured through over 100 issues, which is a rare feat these days, and it can all be attributed to the creative team. What GFT #122 delivers is a prime example of what happens when you find that perfect formula of talented writer, artist, and colorist. Sadly, there are only three issues remaining before the series comes to an end. An 11-year run is pretty sweet to accomplish.

The story starts filled with action from the first panel and doesn’t slow down throughout the entire issue. There are a slew of characters in this issue, which some may consider a lot to take in. But the way it was written, it involved of these individuals without making it feel overwhelming. Whether it is two battling warriors in a snowy and bleak Myst, a consortium of baddies congregated who all have an agenda, or a mob impeding on those at Arcane Acre, the storylines employed keep moving at a steady pace which ultimately lead to the reader remaining engaged in the story.

With so much drama in the GFT, it’s getting hard being Pat S-h-a-n-d <wink>. Seriously though, writer Shand continues to show his uncanny ability in developing stories which engage the reader and spark renewed interest over and over again.

The characters are, as always, visually stunning. It’s apparent that artist Chris Johnson has taken the time to understand a person’s body and form. There isn’t any embellishing or unrealistic body parts (no comment). Johnson is paired with colorist Erick Arciniega, who is a tremendous choice as his essence-capturing skills are top-notch.

Though there are only three issues until the series finale, one thing this issue can achieve is instilling a desire (by the reader) to read more of the series. Heck, why not start with issue one?
