‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Film Being Held Hostage By Hackers

The latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie starring Johnny Depp is due to be released at the end of the month, but news broke yesterday that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is being held by hackers seeking a ransom from Disney.

In a town hall meeting for ABC employees in New York Monday, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that an incident had occurred, but did not say which film the hackers claimed to have. Deadline subsequently learned that it was in fact the fifth Pirates movie. The hackers have stated that they will release bits of the films in increments if the enormous amount of money in Bitcoin is not paid. It is believed that Disney is refusing to pay the ransom, but are instead working with the FBI on this matter.

This is second instance of hackers ransoming entertainment in recent history. The first 10 episodes of Orange Is The New Black were released after Netflix refused to pay the demands of a hacker.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is scheduled to be released May 26. At this time it is unknown how this situation will effect box office performance of the film.
