[Movie News] Top Gun 2 Has Begun Filming

Top Gun

There is definitely a trend of unoriginality in movies, where studios are creating films that feed on our nostalgia. This one is no exception; Top Gun was a hit film from 1986.

As students at the United States Navy’s elite fighter weapons school compete to be best in the class, one daring young pilot (Tom Cruise) learns a few things from a civilian instructor (Kelly McGillis) that are not taught in the classroom.

It was a movie about a cocky young fighter pilot with the codename Maverick who gets the girl, who just happens to also be his teacher. The show was as well known for its iconic one-liners as it was for its soundtrack. One liners included, “I feel the need, the need for speed,” and “It’s classified. I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you.” And the soundtrack included Berlin’s “Take my Breath Away,” Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone,” and “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” by The Righteous Brothers.

It was a good movie, for the time, but the blatant sexism and machismo would not survive today’s audience. There was also a whole generation that had grown up without war. Honestly, I don’t see how you could even achieve the same success by rewriting the script for today’s audience.

At least Top Gun: Maverick will not be a rehash of the same movie. This is a sequel, and we can guess by the name that it will focus on a much older (and hopefully more mature) Maverick.

The storyline is being kept under wraps but we do know that cast includes Tom Cruise returning as Maverick. We also know filming has begun, thanks to this post by Mr. Cruise himself

We can also guess from this Instagram post that Val Kilmer will be returning as Iceman.

There is no mention of any other returning names. Top Gun: Maverick is set to hit theaters on July 12, 2019
