Madeleine L’Engle’s “A Wrinkle in Time” is Coming to the Big Screen in Style

Many of my generation (and subsequent generations) grew up with Madeleine L’Engle and her 1963 Novel “A Wrinkle in Time.” It was an inspiration, and introduction to science and science fiction. It opened doorways for many of us.
For those not familiar with the timeless coming of age story,  it is about two siblings who, along with a friend, go in search of their scientist father who disappeared during an experiment dealing with the fifth dimension. The three journey to other worlds in their quest, guided by three celestial beings – Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which.  The children must survive many perils before they can reunite their family.

A Wrinkle in Time is directed by Ava DuVernay with a screenplay adapted by Jennifer Lee.  The film stars Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michael Peňa, Levi Miller, Deric McCabe, André Holland, Rowan BlanchardZach Galifianakis and Chris Pine.

In 20o3, there was a TV movie starring Katie Stuart that didn’t do the book justice. Let’s hope that this movie does a better job. The trailer shows promise.

One scene that has always stuck in my mind from the book was the cul-de-sac with the families and I am pleased to see that scene beautifully played out in the trailer.

A Wrinkle In Time opens in US theaters March 9, 2018.
