Joss Whedon Steps Down From Batgirl Movie

Batgirl #45 by Babs Tarr

According to the Hollywood Reporter Joss Whedon has stepped down from the production of the Batgirl movie.

Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story,” Whedon said. “I’m grateful to [DC president Geoff Johns and Warners Picture Group president Toby Emmerich] and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I, uh, is there a sexier word for ‘failed?’

This step down isn’t  surprising considering that we haven’t heard anything about the project since it was announced back in March 2017.  This was labeled as DC’s second female led super-hero film, behind Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman was such a hit, that it does make it a hard show to follow.

You have to give Joss Whedon credit, he has admitted defeat. Of course, the recent mediocre performance of Justice League and the criticism he has received for his portrayals of female superheroes may also play into it.

This doesn’t mean that Batgirl is entirely dead, we could still see someone step in to take the reins. I wonder what Patty Jenkins has planned after Wonder Woman 2?
